Former Major League Baseball Star, Cancer Survivor Dave Dravecky To Speak On Faith And Family Night
March 2, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - Dave Dravecky will deliver a message of hope and inspiration when the Penguins host Faith and Family Night on Sunday, March 8.
A former pitcher with the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants, Dravecky was diagnosed with cancer in 1988, requiring half of the deltoid muscle in his throwing arm to be removed. Doctors thought he would never pitch again.
Defying the odds, Dravecky returned to the mound on August 10, 1989, hurling eight innings and leading the Giants to a 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Sadly, less than a week later, Dravecky's career came to an abrupt end when his arm snapped in two during the fifth inning of a game in Montreal.
After the season, a cancerous mass was found in Dravecky's left arm. After several attempts to treat the cancer, Dravecky had his left arm and shoulder amputated in 1991 in order to keep it from spreading and threatening his life.
Since that time, Dravecky has spread his amazing story of hope and triumph through two books (Comeback and The Worth of a Man), as a motivational speaker, and through Outreach of Hope, a non-profit organization Dravecky and his wife, Jan, started to bring hope to people who have suffered - whether from cancer or other afflictions.
Dravecky will address fans from ice level following Sunday's contest against the Norfolk Admirals, which starts at 5:05pm. All fans are encouraged to stay following the game to hear his heart-warming and moving tale.
Tickets for Faith and Family Night are available now. Group tickets can be purchased through Mike Chatburn in the Penguins ticket office by calling 208-5415, and start at just $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for children (ages 14 and under).
Individual tickets can be purchased through all TicketMaster locations, by phone at 693-4100, on-line at www.ticketmaster.com, or at the Wachovia Arena Box Office.
