January 30, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, VA - In honor of the upcoming Olympic games, the Norfolk Admirals are sponsoring an essay contest for Hampton Roads area high school students. The contest is aimed at providing promising young writers a look into the world of sports media.
The essay topic asks: "Should Professional Hockey Players be allowed to play in the Olympics?" Students will have until Monday, February 13th to submit an essay of 1,000 words or less to the Norfolk Admirals. Admirals' staff members will then judge the essays to select a winner.
The contest winner will receive tickets to the Admirals' game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Saturday, March 11th, and will have the opportunity to participate in a pre-game puck drop ceremony, sit in the press box and interview Admirals players.
"We see this essay contest as a great way for students to show their passion for writing as well as their enthusiasm for sports," stated Millie Lomax, Director of Community Relations for the Admirals. "We hope to demonstrate a real behind-the-scenes experience of what it means to work in sports for the winner."
Interested students and school faculty can visit the Admirals website www.norfolkadmirals.com and click the Community box at the bottom of the home page, or on the Educational Programs link under the Community menu of the top navigation bar to find a complete listing of guidelines and prizes.
Essays may be mailed to: Norfolk Admirals Essay Contest, 201. E. Brambleton Avenue, Norfolk, VA 23510, faxed to 757-622-0552 or emailed to admiralsinfo@norfolkadmirals.com with "Essay" in the subject line. All essays must be submitted or postmarked no later than February 13, 2006.
