Adirondack Phantoms News Release

Friday, Jan. 27: Manitoba 2, Phantoms 1, OT - Jason Jaffray scored with 2:39 remaining in regulation to tie the game and Ryan Bayda converted 1:28 into the extra session as Manitoba squeaked out of the Spectrum with a 2-1 overtime victory. The game was scoreless until Matt Ellison put one home at the 5:20 mark of the third period. Both goaltenders were stellar, with Philadephia's Jamie Storr stopping 29 of 31 shots and Manitoba's Sebastien Centomo turning away 28 of 29.

Saturday, Jan. 28: Bridgeport 3, Phantoms 2 - Philadelphia did its best to erase an early 2-0 deficit but couldn't quite climb out of that hole in a 3-2 loss to the Sound Tigers at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Bridgeport had a 2-0 lead after the game's first seven minutes on goals by Sean Bergenheim and Bruno Gervais. Ryan Ready scored just under three minutes into the second period to make it a 2-1 game. It was the first goal Philadelphia had scored in Bridgeport this season after being shut out in their three previous visits. But David Masse scored with just 2.2 seconds remaining in the frame to give Bridgeport another two-goal advantage. Marc Cavosie scored at 13:07 of the third, but the Phantoms could come no closer.

Sunday, Jan. 29: Phantoms 5, Providence 3 - The Phantoms scored four consecutive goals and held on for a 5-3 win over the Providence Bruins at the Dunkin Donuts Center in the first meeting of the season between the two clubs. After a scoreless first period, Nathan Robinson gave Providence a 1-0 advantage just 3:24 into the second frame. But the Phantoms ripped off three goals in just over four minutes, with tallies from Tony Voce at 12:00, Stephen Wood at 15:12, and Brent Kelly at 16:03. Pat Kavanagh gave his club a 4-1 lead with a goal at 6:18 of the third. Providence made things interesting with two third-period tallies, from Robinson at 7:46 and Eric Healey at 16:16, but Josh Gratton iced the game with an empty netter in the final minute. Martin Houle took the win with 23 saves on 26 shots, while Jordan Sigalet made 26 saves on the 30 shots he faced in the loss.

UPCOMING OPPONENTS

Friday, Feb. 3 and Saturday, Feb. 4: Phantoms vs. Hershey; 7:05 and Phantoms at Hershey, 7:00 - The latest installment in the Philadelphia/Hershey rivalry is a home-and-home set between the clubs this weekend, which starts in Philadelphia on Friday and culminates in Hershey on Saturday. It'll be the 112th and 113th games between the two clubs in Philadelphia's 10-year history and will be the sixth and seventh meetings of 12 this season. Philadelphia is 2-3-0-0 in the five games so far this season. The Bears are in second place in the East Division with a record of 28-12-2-7 for 65 points, which is also second-best in the Eastern Conference. Eric Fehr continues to lead the way for the Bears with 21 goals and 23 assists for 44 points (48:21-23-44).

THIS WEEK AT THE WACHOVIA SPECTRUM

The Phantoms come out of the all-star break expecting a veritable barrage of teddy bears this Friday night when they host the Hershey Bears at 7:05. It's the annual Teddy Bear Toss at the Spectrum, the night that all fans are asked to bring a new teddy bear to the game and throw it on the ice when the Phantoms score their first goal! All bears will be collected and donated to local children's charities.

Tickets for Friday's game are still available and can be purchased online at www.phantomshockey.com or by phone at (215) 336-2000, (856) 338-9000 or (302) 984-2000.

STARRING IN WINNIPEG

Philadelphia's all-star delegation made its way to Winnipeg on Monday for the week's festivities at the MTS Centre, the home of the Manitoba Moose. The Phantoms lone on-ice representative is captain John Slaney, who became the AHL's all-time leading defensive scorer earlier this season and is participating in his fifth All-Star game. However, Philadelphia's coaching staff and support staff will be in charge of the Canadian all-stars. Head coach John Stevens and assistants Craig Berube and Kjell Samuelsson will be behind the bench, while equipment manager Derek Settlemyre and athletic trainer Sal Raffa will be handling the needs of the players during the week. In addition, Phantoms mascot Phlex will be on hand to take part in the festivities.

ALL-STAR NOTABLES

John Stevens will be participating in his second AHL All-Star game and his first as a coach. He was part of the event during the 1996-97 season and scored a goal for the Canadian Squad.

Stevens, Berube and Samuelsson comprise the third Phantoms coaching staff to be involved in an All-Star game. Former head coach Bill Barber and his assistant, Mike Stothers, were in charge of the PlanetUSA team in 1998 and ran the Canadian team in 1999.

In addition to the live broadcast on Comcast SportsNet, the AHL All-Star Game will be available free of charge on the B2 Networks this Wednesday night. The puck drops at 8:00 PM.

OUT AND ABOUT

The Phantoms are enjoying a few days off for the All-Star break. However, on Wednesday of this week, Alexandre Picard and Martin Houle will be at Chilly McPhilly's at Comly and Roosevelt in Northeast Philadelphia as guests on Hockey World with Bill Clement. The former Flyer and current OLN studio host will talk with Picard on WBCB 1490 AM starting at 6:00.

WOOD CHIPS OFF HIS FIRST

Phantoms defenseman Stephen Wood hails from Cambridge, Mass. and played his college hockey at Providence College, so it was a bit of a homecoming for him when the Phantoms visited the Providence Bruins on Sunday. Wood took advantage of the situation to score his first American Hockey League goal, which came in the second period on a perfectly-placed wrist shot over the glove of goaltender Jordan Sigalet. Wood also had an assist in the game for a two-point evening.
