Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - Left fielder Eric Young, Jr. crushed his second home run and first baseman Austin Nola continued his tear with a two-hit night as the Tacoma Rainiers climbed out of an early three-run hole to defeat the Albuquerque Isotopes, 6-3, in Friday night's four-game series opener at Cheney Stadium.
Trailing 3-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Rainiers (12-17) rallied for five of their runs against Albuquerque (16-13) starter Peter Lambert (1-2). Young, Jr. put Tacoma on the board when he took a 1-1 pitch from Lambert over the right center field fence for a solo shot. The round-tripper was the first of six consecutive hits as shortstop J.P. Crawford followed up with a knock, pushing his on-base streak to 27 games.
Designated hitter Joey Curletta doubled home Crawford to cut the deficit to one, and Nola singled home catcher Jose Lobaton one batter later to tie the game, 3-3. Tacoma gave starter Jon Niese (1-0) his first lead when third baseman Orlando Calixte provided the sixth-straight hit that scored Curletta. Ian Miller provided an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Nola for the inning's final run, making it 5-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, Isotopes lefty James Pazos dropped a flip from first baseman Brian Mundell while trying to cover first base, which allowed Young, Jr. to score from second for Tacoma's final run and biggest lead of the game, 6-3.
With the help of a dominant bullpen night, Albuquerque was stymied for the remainder of the night when right-handers Tayler Scott (2 IP, 3 SO), Matt Festa (1 IP, 1 SO) and Ruben Alaniz (S, 2) combined to pitch the last four innings scoreless. Alaniz struck out three in the ninth to record his second save in his first appearance since being activated off the IL on Friday.
The Rainiers will play for their third-consecutive victory on Saturday against Albuquerque when right-hander Christian Bergman (0-2, 6.55) fights for his first win on the mound. First pitch is at 5:05 p.m. PDT and Mike Curto will have full coverage on South Sound Talk 850, with audio streaming available on the Rainiers TuneIn Radio Network.
