New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
The New Orleans Baby Cakes rallied for five runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings on Saturday night, only to come up short against the Oklahoma City Dodgers, 8-7.
Trailing 7-2, Austin Dean led off the ninth with a pinch-hit home run. Isan Diaz drew a one-out walk ahead of a Harold Ramirez single, and Matt Snyder was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After Lewis Brinson bounced into a fielder's choice to score a run, Deven Marrero fell behind in the count 0-2 before launching a game-tying three-run homer to center field.
The Dodgers capitalized on a wild pitch in the top of the 10th to move their baserunner to third, where he scored on a ground out by Rocky Gale. New Orleans was unable to answer in the bottom half, with the final out coming on a blistered Monte Harrison liner which ricocheted off Dean's foot for a game-ending runner's interference.
Ramirez slugged his third home run of the year in the third inning after Harrison smoked a leadoff triple, giving the Baby Cakes a brief 2-1 advantage. Oklahoma City came back in the top of the fourth with a three-run homer by Blake Gailen, and added another run in the fifth to end Ben Meyer's outing.
Meyer was charged with five runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings, struck out four and walked four.
Edwin Rios extended the Dodgers' lead to five with his two-run blast in the seventh inning off Kyle Keller.
The Baby Cakes' rally spoiled a strong start by Rob Zastryzny, who fanned 10 in 5 1/3 innings. JT Chargois (1-0) suffered the blown save but picked up the victory.
Brian Moran (0-1) permitted the 10th-inning run and was saddled with the loss.
Ramirez led the Baby Cakes' 13-hit attack with four hits, falling a triple short of the cycle, and is now hitting .361. Harrison chipped in three hits, his third straight multi-hit effort.
The 'Cakes and Dodgers continue the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
