Las Vegas, Nevada - A pair of power play goals and a shorthanded, empty-net goal allowed the Wranglers to snap the Steelheads four-game unbeaten streak, as the Wranglers won, 3-1, at Orleans Arena on Friday night.
With the score tied at one early in the third, Wranglers' (37-9-6) defenseman Scott Schoneck took Shawn Limpright's pass in the high slot and snapped the puck past goaltender Steve Silverthorn (38 saves). Schoneck's fifth of the campaign, at the 4:51 mark, turned out to be the game-winner, as the Wranglers beat the Steelheads (29-17-7) in regulation for just the second time in six tries this season.
The opening period was scoreless, with the Wranglers out-shooting the Steelheads 17-9.
Greg Hornby put the Steelheads in front, 1-0 on a 60-foot slapshot midway through the second period. Hornby raced through neutral ice on the right wing side and blasted a shot as he hit the blue line. The shot appeared to hit Wranglers' defenseman Mike McBain and change directions, beating goaltender Marc Magliarditi (30 saves) along the ice. David Bararuk and Tony Johnson assisted on Hornby's fifth of the year, which came at 11:33 of the stanza.
The Wranglers answered, tying the game at one at 15:12 of the second period. On the power play, Chris Stanley won an offensive zone draw back to defenseman Christian Chartier who fired a shot over the glove of Silverthorn. The man advantage goal was the fourth of the season for Chartier.
Through two periods of play the shots were 27-22 in favor of the home team.
With just 16 seconds left in regulation, and the Wranglers shorthanded, Dan Tudin intercepted the puck from Tyler Kindle and slipped it into the empty net to ice the game at 3-1. Tudin's goal was his 23rd of the season and his 100th point in a Wranglers' sweater.
The final shots were 41-31 in favor of the Wranglers, as the home team registered three specialty team markers, while holding the Steelheads scoreless in four power play chances. The loss drops the Steelheads to 16-8-3. The Wranglers improve to 21-2-3 on home ice.
The Steelheads wrap up their six-game road trip, as they tangle with the Las Vegas Wranglers from Orleans Arena on Saturday, February 25. The puck drops at 8:05 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, "The Ticket," beginning approximately 20 minutes before the drop of the puck. For tickets, call 208-331-TIXS.
