San Diego Gulls News Release
PHOENIX - Tom Lawson stopped 30 shots for his second shutout of the season, and the San Diego Gulls picked up a much-needed road victory, 3-0 over the Phoenix Roadrunners Friday night before 5,438 at US Airways Center.
Making his 10th straight start in net, Lawson helped snap the Gulls' six-game road losing streak while upping San Diego's record to 21-23-5 on the season - still in fourth place in the Pacific Division. The Roadrunners (18-29-3), meanwhile, dropped their second match in five tries against the Gulls, who picked up their first win in Phoenix this year.
Friday's game started off with a bang when Gulls defenseman Doug MacIver and Garrett Burnett fought just 28 seconds in. After that, the goaltender battle dominated the rest of the play.
Phoenix goalie Ryan Cyr entered the contest with an 0-5-0 record, including a 7-0 setback to the Gulls in San Diego on Nov. 18 while playing for Bakersfield. Now a Roadrunner, Cyr is still looking for his initial professional victory after Lawson matched him save for save throughout. For the match, Cyr stopped 40 of the 42 shots he faced, but Lawson didn't allow a single blemish.
In the opening period, the Phoenix netminder made 16 saves while his Gulls counterpart turned aside 10 of his own to keep the match scoreless at the first intermission.
It was more of the same in the second, until Steve Hildenbrand finally figured out how to get a shot past Cyr with 7:08 left in the frame. The Gulls forward notched his 18th goal of the season to put his team up 1-0. He did it again 50 seconds into the third by beating Cyr with a slap shot to give San Diego a two-goal lead. The forward had scored only two goals in his previous 13 games, but he matched that total in just over two periods Friday night.
Pierre-Luc Sleigher capped the victory with an empty netter with eight seconds remaining. Lawson, meanwhile, was a brick wall between the pipes.
