Titans handed 4-1 loss by Nailers

TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Titans could not solve Wheeling goaltender Andy Franck in a 4-1 loss to the Nailers in front of 4,527 at the Sovereign Bank Arena.

It did not take long for the Nailers to break the scoreless tie as Brendon Hodge fired a slap shot through a screen and past Scott Stirling for a power play goal 2:27 into the game.

Mike Doyle made the score 2-0 in favor of the Nailers at 10:51 of the first when he caught Trenton in a bad line change and wristed home his sixth off the season.

The Titans would find themselves in a 3-0 hole after Sean Collin's marker 1:11 into the second period.

The Titans tried to battle back as they fired 19 shots on Franck in the third period and 37 for the game.

With the game already in hand for Wheeling, Chris Pittman picked up his team-leading 15th goal of the season with 9.4 seconds left in regulation to break a scoreless streak against the Nailers that spanned nine periods and of 179:50. Hodge netted an empty-net goal four seconds later to complete the scoring.

Scott Stirling made 22 saves on the night to fall to 6-6-1 on the year.

The Titans finished 1-for-6 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
