Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (34-16-3) earned their fourth straight win, and improved to 6-1 in shootouts after a 4-3 decision over the Gwinnett Gladiators (34-11-6) on Friday night at Germain Arena.
In a high-tempo, back and forth game, the Gladiators opened the scoring when Jeff Dwyer tallied on a 5-on-3 Gwinnett power play at 6:29 of the first period. The Everblades didn't take long however in answering back. Paul Cabana netted his first goal since January 10, and his 18th overall at 9:09 of the opening period with the Everblades on the power play to tie the game. Just 54 seconds later Kevin Bergin scored the first of his two goals by jamming a shot past Gwinnett goaltender Sean Fields.
In the second period, Gwinnett stormed back to score twice, giving them a 3-2 lead heading into the final period. Brian Teixeira scored his first goal as a Gladiator at 10:56, and Guillaume Desbiens gave Gwinnett the advantage completing a 2-on-1 rush by tapping the puck past Everblades goalie Phil Osaer with just 1:21 remaining in the frame.
An exciting and physical third period saw each team storm the other's net. In the closing minutes of regulation, the Everblades, who had Osaer pulled for an extra attacker, watched Bergin tie the game at three with just 41 seconds remaining. Bergin waited at the right post and slammed a centering feed from Reggie Berg past Fields to send the game to overtime.
For the fourth straight game, the Everblades needed a shootout to decide the contest after neither team scored in the overtime period. In the shootout, Dan Sisca netted the only goal, scoring in Florida's second round. Osaer turned away all five Gwinnett shooters.
Osaer earned the win by stopping 39 of 42 Gwinnett shots to increase his record to 16-8-2. Fields earned credit for a tie by turning away 37 Florida shots, bringing his record to 22-8-4.
On the power play, the Everblades finished the night 1-for-5, while the Gladiators closed out game going 1-for-6.
The Everblades return to action on Saturday, February 25 when they host on the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:30 p.m. from Germain Arena.
