ECHL Olympic Update

February 24, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release


PRINCETON, N.J. - The ECHL was represented in men's ice hockey at the XX Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy by current Stockton Thunder forward Maris Ziedins and 24 former ECHL players as well as Team USA coach Peter Laviolette.

Nine of the 12 teams had an ECHL player including Latvia which had the most players with nine, including Ziedins.

Here is a look at how ECHL players performed on Friday:

Antti Laaksonen (Charlotte, 1997-98) helped Finland beat Russia 4-0 to advance to the gold medal game against Sweden.

Tomas Vokoun (Wheeling, 1995-96) made 10 saves and Milan Hnilicka (Richmond, 1993-94) made 15 saves in the Czech Republic's 7-3 loss to Sweden.
