Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba - The Western Hockey League trade deadline has come and gone with the Brandon Wheat Kings announcing one deal this afternoon.

The Wheat Kings have traded the rights to 19-year old left-winger Mark Shefchyk to the Swift Current Broncos in exchange for a fourth round selection in this year's WHL bantam draft.

Brandon has been without the Winnipeg product since early December when he left the club during an Alberta road trip. In 24 games this season, the former first round bantam draft pick of the Calgary Hitmen had five goals and 13 points. Shefchyk enjoyed a career year last season, scoring fourteen goals and 53 points in 72 games.

Swift Current becomes Shefchyk's fourth WHL team. In addition to Brandon and Calgary, he spent most of the 2002-03 campaign with the Vancouver Giants.

Last week, the Wheat Kings acquired 19-year old defenceman Riley Day from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for a fourth round pick in 2006 as well as the rights to 17-year old forward Kevin Undershute.

Among some of the other deals done today, 17-year old Brandon product Bryan Kauk, along with 20-year old Paul Gentile and a draft choice were sent from Medicine Hat to Kamloops in exchange for overage center Jarret Lukin.

The Wheat Kings will be looking to make it back to back wins on Wednesday night when they host the Portland Winter Hawks at the Keystone Centre. This will be Portland's first trip to Brandon in two years.
