Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Calgary, Alberta -- The Western Hockey League trade deadline has come and gone with a flurry of afternoon activity.

In the final two moves of the day, the Regina Pats sent 17-year old Tanner Stockwell to the Tri-City Americans for 17-year old Isaac Smeltzer and a fifth round draft choice.

Meanwhile the Medicine Hat Tigers dealt 19-year old defenceman Liam Couture to the defending Memorial Cup Champion Kelowna Rockets for a fifth round pick in the 2005 WHL bantam draft.

"With the development of our young blueline, we felt this deal was a good opportunity for both the hockey club and Liam," said Tigers' general manager Mike Moore.

Couture was the second Tiger defenceman to be moved in the past week. Last Thursday, Medicine Hat sent 19-year old Riley Day to the Brandon Wheat Kings in exchange for a fourth round draft pick and the rights to Kevin Undershute.

Brandon was relatively quiet at Monday's deadline, moving left-winger Mark Shefchyk to the Swift Current Broncos in exchange for a fourth round bantam draft pick. Shefchyk had left the Wheat Kings in early December.
