Hartney to host Minor Hockey Caravan
January 10, 2005 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- Three members of the Western Hockey League's Wheat Kings will be travelling to Hartney Tuesday night as Coca Cola and Source for Sports hosts January's Minor Hockey Caravan.
Rookies Tyler Plante and Mike Cann will be joined by 20-year old Lance Monych on the ice as the Wheat Kings will be skating with the squirts, novice and atom teams.
Hartney becomes the fourth western Manitoba community to host the Minor Hockey Caravan this season, joining the likes of Glenboro, Shilo and Hamiota. The Wheat Kings will be hosting one final Caravan in February.
A 17-year old native of Brandon, Plante is enjoying an outstanding freshman year in the WHL. Entering Wednesday's game against the visiting Portland Winter Hawks at the Keystone Centre, the former AAA midget Wheat King has compiled a 2.60 goals against average, a .910 save percentage and three shutouts. His three shutouts, his stellar save percentage as well as his sixteen victories are all tops among WHL rookies this season.
Plante's third shutout came Sunday afternoon as the Wheat Kings blanked the hometown Pats 1-0 at the Agridome in Regina. With that shutout, he vaulted past Trevor Kidd, Trevor Robins, Jack Gilroy and Blaine Peterson and into a tie with Robert McVicar for eighth place on the club's all time list for career shutouts. The Wheat Kings' record for most shutouts in a single season is five, and is held by current Houston Aeros' goalkeeper Josh Harding.
Monych was recently chosen Brandon's Player of the Month for December after scoring seventeen points in ten games while Cann, a former first round bantam draft choice of the Wheat Kings, has just returned from Alberta where he patrolled the blueline for the Silver Medal winning Pacific Team at the World Under 17 Hockey Championships in Lethbridge.
In addition to hitting the ice in Hartney tomorrow, the Wheat Kings will be signing Manitoba Hydro Team Posters as well as distributing complimentary tickets for the Friday, January 21st game against Saskatoon, to all minor hockey players in the community.
The tickets are made possible through the generous support of both Coca Cola Bottling and Brandon Source for Sports.
