Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings started week six quickly with only a travel day separating a weekend series at home against the Idaho Steelheads, and a five game road trip that started in Phoenix, on Monday.

The Salmon Kings visited the America West Arena in Phoenix, Arizona for the first time last week, and lost to the Roadrunners, 3-2. Victoria then hit the road to San Diego, California where they beat the Gulls, 4-2. The Salmon Kings then got a short breather in Las Vegas before playing the Wranglers on Saturday, Forward Dustan Heintz scored his third goal of the trip in a 3-1 loss. Week six wrapped up in Long Beach, California where the Salmon Kings lost to the Ice Dogs 6-3, despite recording two shorthanded goals. Week in Review

Breakdown

Victoria opened the scoring seven minutes into the second period when Forward Dustan Heintz notched his second goal of the year, followed by Defenseman Chad Dameworth's first, and the Salmon Kings jumped out to a two goal lead. The Roadrunners came back with three unanswered goals by Shawn Snider, BJ Gaustad and Peter Trovado to beat the Salmon Kings, 3-2. The teams combined 09 on the powerplay while the Roadrunners scored a shorthanded goal. BJ Boxma started in net for the Salmon Kings, while at the other end of the rink Roadrunners Goaltender Mike Mole, earned his first win of the season.

Victoria then made the first of two visits to Southern California when they played the San Diego Gulls on Wednesday night. Salmon Kings Forward Dustan Heintz scored half way through the first period, to open the scoring for the second straight game. Victoria took a 3-0 lead in the second period when Defensemen Steve Lingren and Kurt Drummond scored a goal apiece on the powerplay. The Salmon Kings kept the three goal lead until San Diego capitalized twice with the man advantage, to crawl back into the game late in the third period. Forward Adam Taylor scored his fourth goal of the season to close the score sheet and ice the Gulls with less than three minutes left in the game.

With the sound of slot machines growing old, the Salmon Kings finally played the Wranglers on Saturday, after spending two days in the desert oasis. Both teams started the game paying close attention to detail in their own zone and the score board reflected it as the teams returned to the ice after the second intermission tied at one. The Wranglers opened the scoring when rookie Forward Chris Neiszner scored his first professional goal late in the first period. Salmon Kings Forward Dustan Heintz notched his third goal in as many games, to tie it seven minutes into the second period. Darren Lynch was the difference in the third period, as the Wranglers forward scored his first two goals of the season to send Vegas to the 3-1 victory. The Salmon Kings were 0-4 on the powerplay while the Wranglers converted two of their five opportunities. Vegas out-shot Victoria 37-20 in Goaltender Marc Magliarditi's sixth win of the season, Salmon Kings Netminder BJ Boxma recorded the loss.

The Salmon Kings bussed into Long Beach, California early Sunday morning to get set to play the Ice Dogs. Victoria recorded two shorthanded goals by Forward KC Timmons and Defenseman Simon Mangos. Long Beach Forward Kevin Ulanski scored a shorthanded goal as well, in the Ice Dogs 6-3 victory. The Salmon Kings powerplay was held off the score sheet while Long Beach scored once in five opportunities. The Ice Dogs out-shot the Salmon Kings 32-26 in Greg Hewitt's seventh win of the season. Salmon Kings Goaltender David Currie was charged the loss.

Looking Ahead

The Salmon King have another four game week ahead of the them in week seven. They will finish their five game road trip in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday night before returning home on Wednesday. Victoria will host the Utah Grizzlies and the Stanley Cup on Friday December 2nd. The three game series continues on Saturday night before wrapping up on Sunday afternoon. On Sunday the team will hold their first annual Teddy Bear Toss, followed by the KidSport Post-Game Skate with the Salmon Kings.
