San Diego Goes 2-1-1 Last Week; Now Third In the Pacific Division
November 28, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO -- After starting the season 1-5-0, the San Diego Gulls are starting to pick up the points and have made their way back to the .500 mark. Since the rocky start, San Diego is 6-2-3 and with three more games left on its season-long homestand, more points are up for grabs.
The Gulls went 2-1-1 in a very-busy Thanksgiving week and (as of Monday) are third in the Pacific Division, four points behind the first-place Fresno Falcons and one point back of the second-place Long Beach Ice Dogs.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
Nov. 23 vs. Victoria:
Kurt Drummond scored two power-play goals in the second period and netminder David Currie stopped 29 shots, leading the Salmon Kings to a 4-2 win over the Gulls Wednesday night. With Victoria already leading 1-0, Drummond scored back-to-back power-play markers in the second period, making it a 3-0 game. San Diego came back with two straight power-play tallies in the third period, but Adam Taylor sealed the Victoria victory with 2:50 left in regulation.
Nov. 25 vs. Long Beach:
The Gulls have had their way with the Ice Dogs over the years and Friday night was no exception, as San Diego picked up another win against its Southern California rival, 4-2. Dan DaSilva led the offensive attack with one goal and two assists, while netminder Tyler Weiman stopped 25 shots for his second win of the year. Guillaume Fournier also extended his career-high point streak to nine games.
Nov. 26 vs., Stockton:
The newcomers did it again for San Diego on Saturday night. DaSilva and Alex Kim scored two goals apiece, leading San Diego past the Thunder 5-3. Kim, who signed with the Gulls early last week, also added an assist, as he and DaSilva combined for five points - four goals and one assists. San Diego never trailed after scoring the contest's initial three goals. But the Gulls had to hold off the Thunder, which pulled to within 4-3 late in the second period on a short-handed tally at 15:47. However, David Svagrovsky put San Diego back up by two just two minutes later to round out the scoring. Fournier did not register a point, ending his point streak at nine games.
Nov. 27 vs. Fresno:
Luke Curtin scored two late goals, including the game-winner 3:08 into overtime, as the Falcons snuck past the Gulls 4-3 on Sunday night. San Diego led 2-1 entering the third period and then 3-2 late in the game but couldn't hold either advantage. Curtin sent the match into OT on a score with 4:05 remaining in regulation and then won it with a wrist shot from the right-wing circle that beat Tyler Weiman. Richard Keyes finished with three points (1g, 2a), while Steve Hildenbrand added two assists for the Gulls.
Individual Notes:
DaSilva has eight points (5g, 3a) in four games since being assigned from Lowell... Kim has five points (2g, 3a) in four games with the Gulls... Keyes has six points in the last three games (2g, 4a)... Hildenbrand has 11 points (3g, 8a) in the last seven games...
Team Notes:
San Diego is unbeaten in nine of its last 11 games (6-2-3) and is 2-1-1 so far on its seven-game homestand... The Gulls have killed 49 of their last 52 penalties and have scored 18 power-play goals in the last 11 games... In the Gulls' last 11 games, six have been decided by one goal and four have been decided by two goals...
The Gulls continue their longest homestand of the year with two games next weekend against the Johnstown Chiefs. Saturday's game, which starts at 7:05 p.m., is "Survive the Holidays" night and Gulls hiking water bottles will be given away. Sunday's contest against Johnstown begins at 5:05 p.m. and will be another Kids Night, featuring "Skate with the Gulls" immediately afterward. San Diego closes out the homestand Friday, Dec. 9 vs. Phoenix.
