TinCaps Complete Road Sweep of Hot Rods
June 13, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The TinCaps beat the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay Rays affiliate), 8-3, on Thursday night at Bowling Green Ballpark to finish off a three-game series sweep.
This was Fort Wayne's first series sweep on the road since Aug. 5-8, 2017, when the 'Caps swept a four-game set against the Great Lakes Loons.
The TinCaps (31-34) scored often early. Second baseman Xavier Edwards led the game off with a double. He advanced to third on a fly out by shortstop Tucupita Marcano and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of catcher Blake Hunt.
Fort Wayne stretched its lead to 7-0 thanks to a six-run third inning. Edwards had an RBI single in the frame, as did right fielder Agustin Ruiz, while left fielder Michael Curry collected an RBI on a ground out and designated hitter Luis Roman belted a three-run, opposite-field home run to left. The 'Caps did their damage against Hot Rods (38-29) starter Easton McGee, who is a Midwest League All-Star.
The visitors tacked on one more in the fourth, as Hunt had his second sac fly of the night to plate Edwards, who finished 2-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base.
Bowling Green, which is fighting for the Eastern Division's first-half wild card but now trails Lake County by 1.5 games with three to play, chipped into its deficit with two in the fourth and one in the fifth. However, the Hot Rods were 4-for-19 with runners in scoring position and left 14 on base. (The 'Caps were 4-for-10 in those spots with only three stranded.)
Left-hander Ramon Perez, 19, started and went the first four for Fort Wayne with just one earned run surrendered. Henry Henry pitched the next two in relief, while Carlos Belen (1 1/3) and Cody Tyler (1 2/3) tossed the final two.
