Syracuse Mets News Release
Charlotte, NC - Trailing, 6-1, after five innings on Saturday night at Truist Field, the Syracuse Mets scored ten straight runs, including five runs in the tenth inning to beat the Charlotte Knights, 11-6. The win snaps the Mets' three-game losing streak.
Syracuse (10-9) began its comeback in the top of the sixth inning. Mark Vientos led off with a walk. Two batters later, Trayce Thompson hit a two-run home run over the left-field wall to cut the deficit to three, 6-3. Thompson now has five home runs in his last seven games. Two batters later, Luke Ritter added a solo homer to make it a 6-4 game.
The Mets completed the comeback in the seventh. With one out, Luisangel Acuña worked a walk. Two batters later, with two outs, Vientos hit a fly ball down the right-field line that just stayed fair for a game-tying, two-run home run that tied the game up, 6-6. Vientos finished the game with three hits and a walk.
While the Syracuse offense mounted the comeback, the Mets bullpen was shutting the Knights down. Syracuse relievers Jon Duplantier, Josh Walker, and Cole Sulser combined to throw five scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and no walks with six strikeouts.
Syracuse secured the victory in the tenth. Jose Iglesias started as the free runner at second base. Ritter grounded a ball to second base, and Wilmer Difo attempted to throw Iglesias out at third but made an errant throw allowing runners to reach first and third base safely. Yolmer Sánchez followed with an RBI single, scoring Iglesias to give the Mets a 7-6 edge. Matt O'Neill then hit a sacrifice fly to left field that brought home Ritter for an 8-6 lead. Acuña proceeded to triple down the right-field line, allowing Sánchez to score and give the Mets a 9-6 advantage. After Gamel walked, Taylor Kohlwey grounded a ball under Carlos Perez's legs at first base, scoring Acuña to make it a 10-6 game. Finally, a Rylan Bannon single brought home Gamel to complete the five-run frame as Syracuse took an 11-6 lead before Sulser pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the tenth to secure the win.
The Mets scored their initial run in the fourth. Vientos singled, Bannon singled, Thompson grounded into a fielder's choice, and Iglesias singled to load the bases. A Ritter groundout allowed Vientos to score for the 1-0 Syracuse lead.
Charlotte (8-12) scored all of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Syracuse starter Mike Vasil allowed just one baserunner through the first four innings but struggled in the fifth. Tommy Pham doubled, moved to third on a Zach DeLoach groundout, and Pham scored on an Adam Hackenberg RBI single, tying the game, 1-1 at the time. Perez and Difo both followed with singles to load the bases. Wynton Bernard capitalized with a grand slam home run, giving the Knights a 5-1 lead. Later in the frame, Danny Mendick hit a solo homer for a 6-1 Charlotte advantage. This is the fifth straight game that Mendick has homered in.
The Mets and Knights conclude their six-game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. Right-hander Christian Scott is slated to start on the mound for Syracuse opposite Charlotte right-hander Brad Keller.
