Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (12-8) bounced back after getting swept in their doubleheader yesterday and defeated the Louisville Bats (9-11) by a score of 4-1 on Saturday.
For the first time in the series, the I-Cubs were able to get on the scoreboard first. The run came in the bottom of the second inning on a sharp single back into center field off the bat of Ali Sanchez.
After the third and fourth frames went scoreless, Louisville tied the game in the fifth. Erik González roped a single back up the middle and Francisco Urbaez came home to score.
The tie was short lived, however, as the I-Cubs plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead. Owen Caissie started the scoring with a double and BJ Murray Jr. followed with an RBI double of his own. Curt Casali then singled home the final run of the frame to make it a 4-1 ballgame.
The score of 4-1 held as the Iowa pitching combination of Cam Sanders, Brad Wieck, and Carl Edwards Jr. held Louisville scoreless over the final four innings to secure the win.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Riley Thompson got the starting nod for Iowa today and tossed a gem. In his first start since September 20, 2023, the right-hander tossed four scoreless, hitless innings with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.
- Daniel Palencia made his first appearance since being optioned from Chicago on April 17. He finished with 2.0 innings, two hits, one run, one walk, and two strikeouts.
