June 10, 2005 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns will have eight representatives on the Northern Division squad in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game. The All-Star Game will be held on Tuesday, June 28th, 2005 at 7:35 p.m. from Lake Olmstead Stadium in Augusta, Georgia, home of the Augusta Green Jackets. The eight representatives are the most in the SAL's North Division and tied for the most for the league overall. Additionally, the number eight represents perhaps the Suns highest number ever.
Leading the North Division team will be Suns Manager Gene Richards who has guided the Suns through an excellent first half of the season. Under Richards' helm, the Suns have only been out of 1st place in the North Division standings just two days since the season began. Joining Richards on the bench in Augusta will be Suns Pitching Coach Shawn Barton and Trainer Matt Hunter.
Top vote-getters at their positions, Mike Carp (1B), Grant Psomas (3B) and Dante Brinkley (LF), will each start the All-Star game. The trio has consistently been among the league's offensive category leaders the entire 1st half of the South Atlantic League Season. Brinkley leads the league in batting average and on-base percentage while Carp and Psomas litter the league's power-hitting leader boards in home runs, extra base hits, slugging percentage and RBI's.
Pitchers Jose Sanchez and Gabriel Hernandez were also selected. Sanchez league's the league with 9 wins, while Hernandez (the Suns opening day starter) has been consistently outstanding, currently placing third in the league in strikeouts with a 2.60 ERA.
The Hagerstown Suns, of the South Atlantic League, are the Class A affiliate of the New York Mets. The Suns are currently tied for 1st place in the North Division standings with only nine games remaining in the 1st half, of which the winner will receive an automatic playoff spot. The Suns are owned by Los Angeles based Mandalay Baseball Properties. For more information, contact the Suns at 301.791.6266, info@hagerstownsuns.com or visit the website at www.hagerstownsuns.com.
