Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC -- Left fielder David Cook belted a two-run home run and singled home another run as the Kannapolis Intimidators handled the Charleston RiverDogs, 6-3, in South Atlantic League action Friday night in front of a season-high crowd of 6,123 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Even with the loss, the RiverDogs' magic number for clinching the first-half Southern Division title shrinks to four, thanks to Asheville's 5-1 win over Augusta. The Greenjackets remain five games behind Charleston with only eight to play in the half, including a big four-game series against the RiverDogs beginning Saturday night.

With the win, the Intimidators take the four-game series three games to one and improve to 32-30 on the season as the Southern Division-leading RiverDogs fall to 40-21. It marked only the second series Charleston has lost at home all year, and the three-game skid comes after the RiverDogs had won eight consecutive contests and 12 of their last 13.

Kannapolis starting pitcher Lucas Harrell tossed a three-hitter for six innings and allowed only one earned run while walking four and striking out four. He improved his overall record to 3-5.

Kannapolis' 12 hits all came off Charleston starter Chase Wright, whose record dips to 4-2. Wright also pitched six innings, allowed five runs, struck out three and walked one. Kevin Rival pitched the final three frames for the RiverDogs, and allowed one unearned run while walking three and fanning two Intimidators.

Joining Cook in Kannapolis' hit barrage was second baseman Jose De Los Santos, who collected three hits, while third baseman Javier Castillo joined Cook with two hits.

Charleston left fielder Estee Harris drove home two of the team's three runs, including a RBI single in the fourth and a solo home run to right center in the seventh. Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez also stroked two hits for the RiverDogs.

Kannapolis struck for three runs in the third inning when Castillo doubled to right and scored on Sean Smith's double. Two batters later, Cook cleared the bases with his four-bagger to right, his 14th long-ball of the season.

Charleston retaliated in the bottom of the fourth with Harris' RBI single to center that brought the RiverDogs to within two runs, 3-1. But Kannapolis came back with two more in the fifth on Cook's run-scoring single and another run-scoring single by Bernie Gonzalez, increasing the visitor's lead to 5-1.

Harris greeted Kannapolis' reliever Jeff Little with his sixth home run of the season which brought Charleston to within two runs, 5-3, but the Intimidators increased their lead to 6-3 when Charleston first baseman Ben Jones dropped a routine throw to first that permitted Donny Lucy to score in the eighth.

Charleston rallied for one more run in the bottom of the ninth on Marcos Vechionacci's RBI double down the right field line.

The first-place RiverDogs continue the eight-game home stand by welcoming the second-place Greenjackets to Charleston for a four-game set beginning Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Scheduled to pitch for Charleston is Phil Coke (4-1), while Caleb Salankey (5-3) is slated to throw for Augusta.
