South Atlantic League announces All-Star teams

June 10, 2005 - South Atlantic League (SAL1) News Release


Kings Mountain, NC – John H. Moss, President of the South Atlantic League announced the teams for the 46th Annual South Atlantic League

All-Star Game to be played on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at Lake Olmstead Stadium in Augusta, Georgia. "The teams representing the Northern and Southern Divisions in the 2005 South Atlantic League All-Star Game are full of great, young talent some of whom are destined to become future Major League Players and who will surely provide for a very exciting game in Augusta," Moss said.

The Southern Division club will serve as the host team and will be managed by Bill Mosiello, Field Manager of the Charleston RiverDogs who has led his club to its current standing atop the South Atlantic League Southern Division. Roberto Kelly, Field Manager of the host team, Augusta GreenJackets will provide assistance in his role as Coach, and Steve Renko of the Charleston RiverDogs will be the team's Pitching Coach. Jeffrey Shanley of the Augusta GreenJackets will be the Southern Division Trainer.

Charleston placed the most players on the Southern Division squad with six representing the RiverDogs including Scheduled Starting Pitcher Phil Hughes, Pitcher T.J. Beam, Pitcher Mike Martinez, Starting Centerfielder Tim Battle, Designated Hitter Ben Jones and Utility Infielder Cody Ehlers. Five Southern Division clubs placed three players each including the Asheville Tourists, the Augusta GreenJackets, the Kannapolis Intimidators, the Rome Braves and the Savannah Sand Gnats. The Columbus Catfish and the Greenville Bombers each had 2 player representatives. The Southern Division team consists of 25 players total with a representative from each South Atlantic League Southern Division team.

The Northern Division club will be led by Gene Richards, the Field Manager of the Hagerstown who has guided his club to their current lead in the South Atlantic League Northern Division First Half Title chase. Tim Bogar, Field Manager for the Lexington Legends will serve as a coach for the Northern Division and Shawn Barton, also of the Hagerstown Suns, will be the club's pitching coach. Matthew Hunter of the Hagerstown Suns will be the Northern Division Trainer.

Lexington placed the most players on the South Atlantic League Northern Division All-Star Roster with six players including Scheduled Starting Pitcher Troy Patton, Pitcher Jimmy Barthmaier, Starting Second Baseman Jonny Ash, Starting Shortstop Ben Zobrist, Starting Rightfielder Francisco Caraballo and Starting Centerfielder Hunter Pence. The Hagerstown Suns placed 5 players including Pitcher Jose Sanchez, Pitcher Gabriel Hernandez, Starting First Baseman Mike Carp, Starting Third Baseman Grant Psomas and Starting Left Fielder Dante Brinkley. The Delmarva Shorebirds, the Lake County Captains and the Lakewood BlueClaws placed 3 players each on the club. The Greensboro Grasshoppers and the Hickory Crawdads followed with 2 player representatives each and the West Virginia Power had 1 player representative. The Northern Division team consists of 25 players total with a representative from each South Atlantic League Northern Division team.
