Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, Ga. - For the third game in four days, the GreenJackets wasted another solid start, this one coming from Jonathan Sanchez, in a 5-1 loss to Asheville, Friday at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Sanchez, recently named to the Southern Division All-Star team, went six innings, allowing four hits while striking out eight and walking only one. The GreenJackets drop to 34-25 on the season while Asheville ups its record to 34-26. The GreenJackets remain five games out of first place in the division.
In the seventh inning and with one out, Dustin Hahn led off with a double to left field off reliever Ben Thurmond. Hahn went to third on a wild pitch and was driven in on Neil Wilson single to left with the drawn-in infield. Kyle Wilson drove in Wilson with his double to the gap in right center, giving the Tourists a 2-0 lead they wouldn't relinquish. Jon Armitage added a long home run to right center in the seventh for the GreenJackets only run.
In the eighth inning, Ben Thurmond walked the lead-off batter, Jeff Dragicevich. Adam Gardner relieved Thurmond and gave up a double that was scorched by Joe Koshansky, sending Dragicevich to third. With the infield in, Matt Miller reached safely when his grounder went through Simon Klink's legs. The error scored Dragicevich and gave the Tourists a 3-1 lead. Miller was quickly erased on the bases when Justin Nelson hit into a 6-6-3 double play which allowed Koshansky to score. The Tourists were not done however after Hahn single to right with two outs. Neil Wilson hit a double off the wall in left center, driving in Hahn all the way from first. All three runs scored in the inning were unearned. Chris Buechner pitched three innings to pick up his third win of the season. Ben Thurmond got the loss and moves to 3-5 on the season.
Sanchez was helped by catcher Steve Holm, who caught two runners stealing. In the third inning, Jonathan Herrera singled to center and was gunned down. In the following inning, Dragicevich was thrown out on a perfect throw.
The GreenJackets travel to Charleston for a four game series before they close out the first half of the season against Savannah.
