Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC – The South Atlantic League announced the 46th annual South Atlantic League All-Star Team, and the Charleston RiverDogs are well represented as six members were named to the contest to be played in Augusta on June 28.

Charleston has more All-Stars than any other team in the Southern Division and is tied with Lexington for the most in the entire South Atlantic League.

Leading the way is starting pitcher Philip Hughes. The Yankees first-round pick in 2004 is third in the South Atlantic League with a 1.72 ERA and is second with seven wins. Hughes is scheduled to start the midsummer classic in Augusta.

Joining Hughes in the starting lineup for the Southern Division squad from the RiverDogs is centerfielder Tim Battle and designated hitter Ben Jones.

A third-round pick in 2003, Battle is among the league leaders in a multitude of categories as he is tied for third with 45 runs scored, tied for first with five triples, tied for third with 29 extra-base hits, tied for fifth with 15 doubles and fifth with 20 stolen bases. Battle also leads the RiverDogs with nine home runs.

Jones leads the RiverDogs with 44 RBI and is second on the team with seven home runs. Among the regulars, Jones is also third on the team with a .296 batting average.

Making the squad as a utility infielder is Cody Ehlers. The University of Missouri alumnus is second on the team with 40 RBI and third among the regulars with a .295 average. While forming a fearsome middle of the lineup, Jones and Ehlers have split time between designated hitter and first base.

Two members of the RiverDogs bullpen were also named to the squad. Closer Mike Martinez will be heading to Augusta with a league-leading 19 saves and 27 appearances. The eighth-round pick in 2004 finished first in all of Minor League Baseball for April and May in the Rolaids Relief Man Standings. Martinez has yet to blow a save and has won his only two decisions.

Also heading to Augusta is reliever T.J. Beam. The right-hander has posted a 2.13 ERA with a save in 21 games. The 10th-round choice in 2003 has struck out 48 and allowed only nine earned runs in 38 innings of work.

All six players will join manager Bill Mosiello, who was selected to lead the Southern Division squad earlier on Friday. RiverDogs pitching coach Steve Renko will serve on Mosiello's staff. Torre Tyson, the RiverDogs' hitting coach, was also selected but due to a prior family commitment will not be able to participate.

The RiverDogs continue their eight-game homestand and wrap up the four-contest set with the Kannapolis Intimidators on Friday night. It's another Sprint Friday Night Fireworks display and Dukes Mayonnaise/Food Lion Family Night. Former College of Charleston president Alex Sanders will also be on hand to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Tickets can be purchased for tonight's game and the rest of the homestand by calling the RiverDogs box office at (843) 577-DOGS or by visiting the team's website at www.riverdogs.com.
