Columbus Catfish News Release

GREENSBORO, NC— Allowing just a run in the first inning with one out, the Catfish pitching staff turned in an excellent performance tonight in Greensboro, shutting down the Grasshoppers in the final 8.2 innings in a 3-1 win in the series finale. RHP Blake Johnson gave up just one run in five innings tonight while striking out eight, wining for the fourth time this season. Johnson has allowed just four earned runs in his last seven starts (40.2 innings). RHP Brian Akin tossed two scoreless innings, and RHP Kyle Wilson gave up just one hit in the final two innings for his second save. The Fish win is their lone win in a four game series, as they continue an eight-game roadtrip with a four-game series starting in Kannapolis tomorrow. The win gives the Catfish a 24-37 mark and Greensboro drops to 30-30.

In the first inning, Johnson allowed an RBI single on a slow roller in front of the mound to give Greensboro a 1-0 lead. The Catfish tied the game in the second when 2B Travis Denker scored on an RBI double by RF Ryan Russ. In the fourth inning with the bases loaded and two outs, LF Sam Steidl delivered a clutch single through the left side against Greensboro starter RHP Rick Vanden Hurk, giving Columbus a 2-1 lead. The Fish added a run in the eighth inning when 1B Cole Bruce singled home Denker from second. Bruce had two hits tonight and six hits in three games in the series, including three HR. Wilson got defensive help in the ninth inning from Russ, who made a terrific catch on a line drive to the wall to get the first out of the ninth.

Tomorrow the Catfish send RHP Chris Malone (5-2, 3.30 ERA) to the hill to face the Kannapolis Intimidators (Chicago White Sox) in the first game of a four-game series. Malone shared Dodger Pitcher of May honors with Blake Johnson. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
