Stuart named Rivermen AHL Man of the Year
April 4, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release
Peoria, IL (April 4, 2006) - The Peoria Rivermen, the proud primary affiliate of the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League (NHL), announced today that defenseman Mike Stuart has been named the team's winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Peoria community during the 2005-06 season.
Stuart possesses the skill and ability to someday have a successful career in the NHL, yet we at the American Hockey League (AHL) level are privileged enough to at this time call him one of our own. Still, it is not what he does on the ice that makes Stuart superior to anyone else in this League. It is what he gives of himself off the ice in the community as an ambassador of the Peoria Rivermen Hockey Club and the AHL.
From the day he arrived in Peoria prior to the start of this season, Stuart has been energetic in the community, and he continues to lead the way for the entire Rivermen organization. Perhaps the most impressive thing about Stuart is his amazing ability to relate to all people and all ages. He has graciously volunteered himself for nearly every Rivermen community appearance this season, ranging from appearances at local businesses to those at preschools, the Children's Hospital of Illinois, and everything in between. He shows up on time and does not leave until he has accomplished what he set out to do. Stuart constantly puts others before himself and is the perfect example of someone who is involved in the community for all of the right reasons. He is a positive role model for all who look up to him.
In recognition of his efforts, Stuart will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming Rivermen home game.
Stuart is now one of 27 finalists for the AHL's 2005-06 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced later this month.
