Portland Pirates News Release

PORTLAND, ME- The Portland Pirates are proud to announce that Curtis Glencross has been named the team's winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Portland community during the 2005-06 season. In his first season with the Pirates, Glencross has made an immediate impact on the Portland community by becoming one of the most active players in the Pirates community relations efforts.

Glencross has presented two of the Pirates "Goals for Success" programs sponsored by Pepsi and Healthy Maine Partnerships. The program is designed to teach kids from grades 3-8 about the importance of setting goals and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Earlier this season, Glencross also helped lead one of the Pirates/Country Kitchen Youth Hockey Clinics for the Casco Bay Squirt travel team at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

In addition to his work in the classroom and at the rink, like many of his teammates, he graciously gave his time to visit patients at The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center. This season, he and many other Pirates players have made four visits to The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center.

On February 19th, Glencross joined with his other teammates to participate in "Salty Pete's Skate for the Kids" as part of the "Day of Hockey" an event that helped to raise funds and awareness for the kids at The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center. Glencross personally donated $500 to the Barbara Bush Children's hospital as part of the team's $1,500 donation to the event that helped raise $25,000 for the hospital. Later this month, Glencross and the entire Pirates organization will be recognized by the Barbara Bush Children's hospital and the Children's Miracle Network as "Community Champions" for the active role the Pirates play in the fundraising for the hospital.

Throughout the year, Glencross has been involved in many of the Pirates promotional events and participated in numerous autograph sessions and in-game promotions at Pirates home games. He also made numerous appearances at local Hannaford Supermarkets and local restaurants for many of the Pirates community appearances.

Glencross' physical style of play and ability to battle injuries and adversity has made him a great role model for the Portland community, making him one of the most recognizable players. Always conducting himself in a professional manner, Curtis Glencross has been an excellent representative of the Portland Pirates on the ice and in the community.

In recognition of his efforts, Glencross will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming Pirates home game.

Glencross is now one of 27 finalists for the AHL's 2005-06 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced later this month.
