Cook named Phantoms Man of the Year

April 4, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release

The Philadelphia Phantoms are proud to announce that defenseman Charlie Cook has been named the team's winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the greater Philadelphia community during the 2005-06 season.

Cook is in his first full season as a professional and has established himself well not only in the community, but on the ice. Originally from Port Huron, Michigan, Cook joined the Phantoms for their 2005 Calder Cup run after completing his collegiate career at Cornell University. In 60 games this season, he has scored two goals, added 13 assists and is leading the team with a +10 rating: 60(2/13/15) +10.

The 23 year-old made his mark throughout the Delaware Valley by volunteering to participate in a host of youth-based activities, ranging from school visits where he read books and shared his life experiences, to the ice as an instructor of young skaters. He bowled at the Kids Club party and earlier in the season ate a bowl of Phantoms specialty cereal to promote the team at one of his many in-store meet-and-greet appearances. Cook has also delivered smiles, teddy bears and good cheer to children with several visits to area hospitals.

In recognition of his efforts, Cook will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming Phantoms home game.

Cook is now one of 27 finalists for the AHL's 2005-06 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced later this month.

The Phantoms are in Norfolk for a Wednesday night affair with the Admirals and return to the Wachovia Spectrum on Friday at 7:05 to host the Hershey Bears. It's Hall of Fame Night at the Spectrum, when goaltender Neil Little will be enshrined into the Phantoms Hall of Fame. Tickets for all remaining Phantoms games are available online at www.phantomshockey.com or by phone at (215) 336-2000, (856) 338-9000 or (302) 984-2000. As always, kids tickets for all Phantoms games are just $8.00.
