Stingrays Fall to Charlotte for First Time This Season, 3-2
December 6, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays captain Brad Farynuk scored a goal for his fourth straight game but it wasn't enough as the Rays fell to the Charlotte Checkers for the first time this season by a score of 3-2 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
"I don't judge the quality of the games by wins and losses," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "I thought we came out ready to play and ready to fight."
In the first period, fight is exactly what they did. Right at the drop of the puck Nate Kiser and Jared Nightengale dropped the gloves to start the game out with a bang. It wasn't until 17:06 of the period that either team scored. Charlotte took a 1-0 lead on Brian Deeth's third goal of the year, his second against the Stingrays.
In the second period, the Checkers got a goal by Ryan Hillier at 3:06 to take a 2-0 lead. At 10:52, Farynuk scored his sixth goal of the year on the power play to cut the lead in half. The goal was assisted by Jeff Corey and Michael Dubic.
In the third period the Rays tied the score up at two on Keith Johnson's fourth goal of the season. The goal came at 3:12 of the third period and was assisted by Zach Tarkir and Farynuk, another power play goal. Just over a minute later David Rutherford got his fourth goal of the season and gave the Checkers the 3-2 lead, the eventual final score.
The winning goaltender was Maxime Daigneault who stopped 26 of the 28 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Michal Neuvirth who stopped 33 of the 36 shots he faced. The Rays went 2-7 on the power play while killing off 10 of the 11 short handed situations they faced.
We'll be back on Friday night when the Rays travel to Florida to take on the Southern Division leading Florida Everblades. Game time will be at 7:30 P.M. You can hear the game live on ESPN radio 910 the TEAM starting with the Benitos pre-game show beginning at 7:15.
