Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charleston, S.C. - The Charlotte Checkers lost their previous five games against South Carolina but they finally got a victory in a close 3-2 game over the Stingrays on the road.

A fight between defenseman started just two seconds into the first period as the Checkers Jared Nightingale and Stingrays Nate Kiser threw punches to get the crowd going. Later, the Checkers struck first where it really counted when defenseman Brian Deeth fired a sharp angle shot that trickled in behind Stingrays netminder Michal Neuvirth at 17:06. This put the Checkers up 1-0 after twenty minutes.

In the second period, Checkers forward Ryan Hillier put his team up by two when he flipped the puck over the shoulder of Neuvirth at 3:06. The Stingrays got on the board during a power play when defenseman Brad Farynuk slipped the puck past Checkers goalie Maxime Daigneault at 10:52 slashing Charlotte's lead in half, 2-1.

During the third stanza, the Stingrays tied the contest when Keith Johnson scored at 3:12 but the Checkers retrieved their lead which would prove to be the game winner. It was during a two-man advantage that Mike Bayrack fed David Rutherford at the front of the net. Rutherford made no mistake as he slammed the puck home at 4:22. Despite a number of late shots, the Stingrays couldn't tie the game again and Charlotte skated away with a 3-2 win.

The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game will take place on Dec. 17th against the Elmira Jackals at 7 p.m. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date.
