
Gladiators Pound Sea Wolves 9-2

The Gwinnett Gladiators moved into a tie for third place in the ECHL's South Division as they knocked off the Mississippi Sea Wolves 9-2 on Saturday night at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Gwinnett improves to 9-6-4 on the season with the victory. The nine goals scored by Gwinnett set a new all time team record for most goals in a game in Gladiators history eclipsing the old mark of 8 set during each of the last five seasons.
The Gladiators opened up a 2-0 lead on the Sea wolves with a pair of goals 71 seconds apart in the first period. Jordan Fox slipped behind the Sea Wolves defense at the Mississippi blue line and walked in untouched on Sea Wolves netminder Jeremy Duchesne before beating the netminder with a snapshot at 16:09 of the opening period. Chris Cava collected an assist on the goal for Gwinnett feeding Fox on the break. Jeff Mason also had a helper on the goal.
Pat Bateman pushed the Gladiators lead to 2-0 with his 8th goal of the season at 18:20 of the first period. Picking up a loose puck along the goal line, Bateman slipped out of a pile up and threaded the puck thorugh the legs of Duchesne for the marker. Andy Brandt and Dirk Southern had the assists on the power play goal for Gwinnett.
Gwinnett took a 3-0 lead on the Sea Wolves on Scott Marchesi's 3rd goal of the season. Keeping the puck in at the blue line on a power play, Marchesi whipped a wrist shot from the top of the left wing circle through traffic and past Duchesne for the goal. Fox and Bateman collected the assists on the goal for Gwinnett at 3:25 of the second period.
Mississippi snapped Kevin Nastiuk's shutout bid for the Gladiators at 6:19 of the second period. Alexandre Parent was able to slip past the Gladiators defense at the Gwinnett blue line and beat Nastiuk on a breakway. Ryan Cruthers and Mike Berry had the assists on the goal for the Sea Wolves.
Brad Schell's eighth goal of the season regained the three goal advantage for Gwinnett. With the Gladiators third power play goal of the game, Schell slipped in over the Mississippi blue line and used his rarely-seen slapshot from the top of the left wing circle to beat Duchesne for the goal. Schell's marker chased Duchesne from the Mississippi net in favor of backup netminder Ryan Munce. Marchesi collected an assist on the goal at 11:14 of the second period for Gwinnett.
The Sea Wolves got one back before the end of the middle stanza as Parent notched his second of the contest. Parent walked in the the Gladiators zone and ripped a slapshot from the right wing circle past Nastiuk for the marker. Cruthers and Chase Trull hooked up to set up the goal for the Sea Wolves at 12:27 of the middle stanza.
Gwinnett exploded for a team season high five goals in the third period to put the game away. Gwinnett posted two on the power play while setting a new all time team record for most goals in a game. Jeff Dunne got the scoring going for Gwinnett just 46 into the third beating Munce from the bottom of the left wing circle.
Bruce Graham gave Gwinnett a 6-2 lead at 2:26 of the third period beating Munce on a second effort in the slot. Dan Sullivan then pushed the Gwinnett lead to 7-2 as he capitalized on a turnover in the slot and beat Munce for the unassisted marker at 5:47 of the third period.
Graham's second goal of the contest on the power play at 9:32 of the third pushed the Gwinnett lead to 8-2. Parked in the slot, Graham ripped a slapshot over the shoulder of Munce for the marker. Matt Siddall and Marchesi had the assists on the power play goal for Gwinnett.
Schell's second goal of the game at 13:27 of the third period gave the Gladiators a 9-2 lead and set the team record for most goals in a game in team history. Travis Fuller and Dunne notched the assist on the power play goal for Gwinnett.
Nine players finished with more than one point in the contest. Gwinnett got 21 saves from Nastiuk in the win his 5th of the season for Gwinnett. The Gladiators went 5-for-6 on the power play in the win while Mississipppi went 0-for-4 on the man advantage.
The Gladiators return to action on Sunday as they return home to the Arena at Gwinnett Center to host the Charlotte Checkers at 4:05 p.m. Catch the play by play action on WDUN, News Talk 550.
