Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads lost 4-2 to the American Conference, South Division's Pensacola Ice Pilots Friday night at the Bank of America Centre in the first-ever meeting of the two teams. The 4,043 fans in attendance saw Idaho strike first, but Pensacola controlled play after that and extended its winning streak to four games.

Idaho's Frank Doyle stopped 27 of 31 attempts, while Pensacola's Frederic Cloutier prevented 32 of Idaho's 34 shots.

Idaho had two early power play opportunities and capitalized on the second. Frank Lukes passed to defenseman Darrell Hay and as goaltender Frederic Cloutier went down to make the save, Hay instead fed Scott Burt who easily planted Idaho's first goal of the game at 3:51. The Ice Pilots didn't wait long to even the score. Cory Stillman, tied up by a Steelhead, still managed to get a weak shot off. It looked like Doyle made the save, but somehow the muffin trickled through his five hole at 4:25. The Ice Pilots quickly snatched a one-goal lead when Jason Beckett wristed a shot through traffic and beat a screened Doyle. By the end of the first 20-minutes, Pensacola had outshot Idaho 15-7.

Pensacola scored a goal late in the second frame, but it was waived off because the referee determined a player was in Idaho's crease. However, just moments later at 16:58, the Ice Pilots scored one that did count. Dwayne Hay beat Doyle over his right pad giving his team a 3-1 lead.

Beckett tallied his second point on the night with an assist on Pensacola's fourth goal. On the power play, Beckett took the shot and Alex Materukhin redirected it at 2:05 to increase the lead by three. Then, on the power play, Idaho pulled Doyle to give the team a two-man advantage and it paid off. With pressure on Pensacola's net, Warren Peters jammed the puck home at 14:47. Despite firing 19 shots at Cloutier during the third period, Idaho could get no closer.

The two teams resume the three-game series tomorrow night at 7:10 p.m.
