ANCHORAGE, AK – Jamie Hodson stopped 31 shots and Dustin Vanballegooie scored the game-winner 25 seconds into the final period as Fresno edged Alaska 2-1 before 4,448 Friday night at Sullivan Arena.

In a physical, hard-hitting game, the teams battled through a scoreless first period before Charles Linglet set Chris Minard and Scott Gomez loose on a two-on-one to start the second. Gomez, the league's assist leader with 35, fed Minard, who punched home his ECHL-leading 26th of the season (and 13th in seven games) only 20 seconds into the middle frame. Michael Kiesman tied the game at 1-1 eight minutes later with Fresno on the power play, finishing off an odd-man rush.

The winner came courtesy of a perfect drop pass from Falcon captain Dan Tessier (who also assisted on Kiesman's goal) to the trailing Vanballegooie, who glided down the slot before firing a wrist shot top shelf over a beaten Lance Mayes' left shoulder. The Aces came up empty on four power plays in losing for the first time since December 29.

The loss allowed Alaska's rivals to gain ground in the bunched-up West Division, where six points separate second place from seventh. The third-place Aces dropped to 19-12-3, just one point ahead of the Falcons (18-13-4), who are tied for fourth with San Diego, 4-1 winners over second-place Long Beach Friday.

Tomorrow night's 7:15 p.m. rematch against Fresno, currently on a 6-0-1 run of its own, will be broadcast live on flagship station KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, where Alaska's home games and selected road contests also can be seen on a pay-per-view basis, courtesy of B2 Networks. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
