San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO â The San Diego Gulls, who've rolled off three straight wins, look to make it four when they host the Louisiana IceGators for the first time ever tonight at the Sports Arena.
SERIES HISTORY:
This is the second all-time meeting between the Gulls and IceGators and first-ever at the Sports Arena. The two teams met for the first time last season, with Louisiana pulling out a 2-1 victory in overtime. Tonight is the only regular season match-up between the West Division Gulls and South Division IceGators.
2003-04 HEAD-TO-HEAD SERIES:
2/16/04 San Diego 1 @ Louisiana 2 (overtime)
LAST GAME (JAN. 14 @ LONG BEACH ICE DOGS):
Brian Gornick scored twice, Sylvain Deschatelets added two assists and goaltender Eddy Ferhi stopped 26 of 27 shots, leading the Gulls to a 4-1 victory in Long Beach. Scott Borders gave San Diego a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, before Curtis Brown tallied halfway through the second, giving the Blue and Orange a 2-0 lead. That's when Ferhi took over, thwarting a bunch of quality Ice Dog opportunities. Gornick then sandwiched his two goals in between Long Beach's only tally in the third period. The Gulls are now unbeaten in 25 of their last 26 games against the Ice Dogs (24-1-1), dating back to October 2002.
GULLS UPDATE:
The Gulls (18-11-4) enter the day tied with the Fresno Falcons for fourth in the West Division, nine points behind the first-place Bakersfield Condors... San Diego, which has games in hand on all teams ahead in the standings, is only three points out of second and one point out of third place... The Gulls have won three games in a row after going winless in their previous five games... They are 11-3-2 at home this season and 7-8-2 on the road... San Diego has outscored its opponents 63-44 at the Sports Arena...
OTHER NOTES:
Curtis Brown is in the midst of a six-game point streak, notching nine points in that span (3g, 6a)... Mike Garrow had his five-game point and assist streak snapped last night in Long Beach... Gornick, who leads the club with 13 goals overall, has tallied nine times in the last 13 games... San Diego still has three defensemen out with injuries: Evgueni Nourislamov (sprained knee), Sean Murphy (broken thumb) and Jonathon Shockey (separated shoulder). Forward Guillaume Fournier (concussion-like symptoms) and goaltender Trevor Koenig (elbow tendonitis) both remain out of the lineup as well... Sean O'Connor, who's missed the last two games with a charley horse, is doubtful for tonight's game. O'Connor, the reigning ECHL Player of the Month, is second on the Gulls with 12 goals and is tied for the club lead with a plus-minus rating of +12... The Gulls have been perfect on the penalty kill the last two games, but have allowed 23 power-play goals in its last 17 games overall... They still have the second-worst penalty-killing unit in the ECHL (78.6 percent)...
LOUISIANA UPDATE:
Louisiana (16-17-3) begins the day tied with the Mississippi Sea Wolves for fourth place in the South Division, 10 points back of the first-place Pensacola Ice Pilots... The IceGators are tied with Mississippi and the South Carolina Stingrays for the eighth and final playoff spot in the American Conference. (The top eight teams in the American Conference qualify for the playoffs, while the top four teams in each division make the playoffs in the National Conference)... Louisiana has won two straight (both against the Sea Wolves), but have lost eight of its last 11 games overall (3-8-0)... Wes Mason is tied for fourth in the ECHL with 37 points (17g, 20a)... Randy Dagenais leads all ECHL defensemen with 28 points (8g, 20a). His eight goals and 20 assists both rank second among league blue-liners...
TRANSACTIONS:
Defensemen Justin Silver and Pierre Dufour signed for tonight's game... Trent Clark was released on Monday... Fournier and Koenig both remain on the seven-day injured list... Murphy and Shockey both remain on 30-day injured reserve...
