Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte Checkers hosted the Texas Wildcatters in the fifth game of a six-game homestand. In the fourth meeting of these teams this year, the Checkers came away with a 3-1 victory, making it their fifth win in a row at home. The win makes them undefeated at home in 2005.

In the first period, Wildcatter Kevin Cooper gave Texas the lead by scoring on a power play goal. Charlotte then tied the game at 13:19 with a shot directly in front of the Texas net by center Eddie Pershin. This is Pershin's 13th goal of the season, and he is now tied with Lee Falardeau as Checkers leading goal scorer. Pershin also added two assists in the game.

"He's the smartest guy on the ice," said Checkers Head Coach Derek Wilkinson of Pershin. "He sees things other guys don't. When he plays focused and determined, he's one of the best players in the league."

Checker forward Dusty Jamieson showed his strength in the second by skating past two Wildcatters, and then put the puck past Texas goaltender Phil Osaer to give Charlotte the lead 2-1. Credit the assist to Rory Rawlyk, making it his 11th of the season. Rawlyk stood out in the third by making the score 3-1 by his shot from the blue line. Within the last six games, Rawlyk has notched six points.

"He's [Rawlyk] an offensive talent," Wilkinson said. "When he get his defensive game where he needs to be, he can get a call-up to Hartford like he deserves."

The win puts the Checkers up 22-13-2 for 46 points. Charlotte takes on the Johnstown Chiefs on Thursday, January 14 at Cricket Arena.
