
Stars Stun Rockford 6-5 in OT

Cedar Park, TX - The Texas Stars (28-17-3-3, 62 points) defeated the Rockford IceHogs (20-22-3-4, 47 points) 6-5 on Friday night in front of 5,545 fans at Cedar Park Center. Stars' forward Greg Rallo scored the decisive goal to lift Texas over Rockford with only 3.3 seconds remaining in overtime. With six minutes left in regulation, defenseman Dan Spang notched the game-tying goal to force overtime. During the first period, the Stars scored four goals in the last five minutes to end the first 20 minutes of play with a 4-1 lead. Six Texas skaters registered a two-point night, including Cody Chupp, Colton Sceviour, Luke Gazdic, Brad Lukowich, Dan Spang and Maxime Fortunus. Texas goalie Brent Krahn (6-5-0) made 29 saves to bring the Stars to 15-8-3-2 at home. After 20 minutes of play, Rockford goalie Hannu Toivonen (10-11-3) stopped nine of 13 shots for the loss. IceHogs goalie Alec Richards (10-14-1) stopped 13 of 15 shots faced in a relief effort. Texas will host the Rockford again on Saturday, February 12th at 7:00 PM.
Rockford jumped out to an early 1-0 lead 34 seconds into the first period with a goal from right wing Igor Makarov. Texas' left wing Luke Gazdic responded with a goal to tie the game 1-1. Defensemen Maxime Fortunus and Brad Lukowich supplied assists on the power play at 14:44. Michael Neal snapped the puck past Toivonen just 34 seconds later to give Texas its first lead of the night. Forwards Cody Chupp and Ondrej Roman each notched an assist to give Texas a 2-1 lead. Texas extended its lead to 3-1 with a power-play goal from Lukowich off a backhand shot. Right wing Colton Sceviour and Fortunus each helped with 1:02 remaining in the first period. Chupp ended the first-period scoring with a shot that deflected off the post and slipped past Toivonen with nine seconds remaining. Forward Kael Mouillierat supplied the assist to end the first 20 minutes of play 4-1, his first career AHL point.
Center Peter LeBlanc poked a power-play goal past Krahn to give Rockford a 4-2 score at 4:11 of the second period. Rockford's right wing Ben Smith scored midway through the period at 9:17, trimming the Texas lead to 4-3. Just 1:07 later, Rockford tied the game 4-4 with a goal from left wing Rob Klinkhammer to end the second period.
IceHogs' center Brandon Bollig snapped a shot past Krahn in the third period at 9:02, giving Rockford a 5-4 lead. The Stars responded with a goal from defenseman Dan Spang at 13:59. Gazdic supplied the assist to tie the game 5-5. Spang's sixth goal of the year sent the game to overtime.
Texas' right wing Greg Rallo tallied the decisive power-play goal with only 3.3 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Stars a 6-5 victory.
Prior to the game, the Texas Stars announced the team has signed center Dave Bonk to a PTO (professional tryout agreement). The 28-year old center has played the majority of the season with the CHL's Allen Americans. Bonk has appeared in 33 games with the Americans, scoring 15 goals and 29 assists for 44 points. The 188-pound center also appeared in six games with the Oklahoma City Barons this year, posting one assist and four penalty minutes. Last Season, the Brandon, MB native played with the Manglerud Star in Norway. Before joining Manglerud, Bonk played with the ECHL's Bakersfield Condors during the 2008-09 season. The center led the Condors in points and assists (31g-51a82) in 60 games. Bonk made his Texas Stars AHL debut on Friday night against the Rockford IceHogs.
The Rockford IceHogs will face Texas again on Saturday, February 12th at 7:00 PM. The first 2,500 fans will receive a Texas Stars gym bag presented by University Federal Credit Union. The Stars begin an eight-game road trip on Monday, February 14th at 6:00 PM against the Lake Erie Monsters.
