Syracuse Crunch News Release
Norfolk, VA - Coming off back-to-back wins in which they scored a combined nine goals, the Syracuse Crunch couldn't get one of their 29 shots past Norfolk netminder Mike Smith, falling to the Admirals by a 3-0 score tonight at The Scope.
Chris Durno, Troy Milam and Marc-Antoine Pouliot each scored for Norfolk, while Mattias Ritola picked up two helpers for the home squad. J.P. Levasseur, making his fourth straight start, stopped 32 of 35 shots for the Crunch in the losing effort.
Syracuse battles Norfolk again tomorrow night at The Scope at 7:30 p.m.
The Crunch couldn't find any rhythm in the early going and the recently potent power play that scored three goals in back-to-back games was ineffective to start the game.
Norfolk jumped on top 1-0 with the Crunch on the power play at the 6:32 mark of the first when Admirals captain Durno picked the pocket of a tripped up Nick Bonino, moved in on a breakaway and sniped a shot over the glove of Levasseur for the shorthanded marker.
That was the only blemish of the period for Levasseur, as he stopped 13 of 14 shots. Smith denied all nine Crunch bids he saw in the game's first 20 minutes.
It remained a one-goal game until the Crunch got into penalty trouble late in the second stanza when John Mitchell and Kyle Palmieri took back-to-back infractions for hooking and high-sticking at the 16:41 and 17:01 marks, respectively, giving Norfolk a long 5-on-3 advantage.
Levasseur made back-to-back point blank stops about a minute into the two-man advantage, but could not stop a slapper from Troy Milam through a screen at the 18:14 mark, putting Norfolk up 2-0.
The score stayed that way until Pouliot re-directed Ritola's centering feed past Levasseur with his skate with six minutes to play in regulation to put Norfolk up 3-0.
