Bridgeport Islanders News Release
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers traveled north this past weekend for a two-game road trip which began on Friday night against the Manchester Monarchs and concluded Saturday evening in Portland against the Pirates. The Sound Tigers found themselves in an early 3-0 hole on Friday night and fought their way back to a 4-3 deficit following goals from Rob Hisey, Justin DiBenedetto and David Ullstrom, but the Monarchs scored twice in the final period to come away with the 6-3 win. The Sound Tigers then took on Portland on Saturday night, still in search of their first road win of the season. T.J. Brennan and Matt Ellis scored for the Pirates, but Jesse Joensuu netted his second goal of the season midway through the third to cut the deficit to one. However, the Sound Tigers were stymied by Pirates goaltender David Leggio who made 36 saves including a few from point-blank range in the waning seconds as Portland remained undefeated at home this season and handled Bridgeport 2-1.
Oct. 30 Game Postponed...
At the request of the City of Bridgeport, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers have postponed their scheduled game on Oct. 30 against the Manchester Monarchs to accommodate President Obama's visit to the Arena at Harbor Yard.
The Oct. 30 contest would have been the second half of a home-and-home weekend series between the Sound Tigers and the Monarchs. Bridgeport and Manchester play each other a total of 12 times this season. A future date has not been determined and the Sound Tigers and Monarchs are working with the American Hockey League to reschedule the game for later in the season.
Martin Recalled on Emergency Basis...
The New York Islanders announced today that they have recalled forward Matt Martin on emergency loan from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League.
Martin played in each of the Sound Tigers first seven games this season, notching one goal and two assists. The Windsor, ON native made his NHL debut last season for the Islanders
and recorded two assists in five games. A 6-3, 210 lbs. forward, Martin had a breakout rookie season last year with the Sound Tigers with 31 points in 76 games following his junior career with the Sarnia Sting of the OHL.
Familiar Faces Return...
The Sound Tigers welcomed back two familiar faces to the team this week. Goaltender Nathan Lawson was loaned from the New York Islanders on Tuesday, and the Sound Tigers signed center Jeremy Colliton to a professional tryout contract (PTO) on Thursday. Lawson started Friday night's 6-3 loss to the Manchester Monarchs, and returns for his third season with the team. Colliton played 232 games between 2005-09 for the Sound Tigers, and the Blackie, ALTA native ranks in the Sound Tigers top ten all-time in games played (234), goals (48), assists (83) and total points (131).
Welcome To The Big Show...
Multiple Sound Tigers rookies have made important contributions to the Sound Tigers early this season. Defenseman Travis Hamonic and forwards Rhett Rakhshani and David Ullstrom all scored their first career professional goals in the course of the last few games, and Rakhshani and Ullstrom are currently tied for the team lead in goals. Rookie goaltender Kevin Poulin made 31 saves and earned his first career professional win on Oct. 17 in a 4-1 decision over Portland.
