LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS

At Portland (10/19): It took a nine-round shootout to determine the winner as the Portland Pirates narrowly edged the Manchester Monarchs, 3-2 in a shootout at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Tuesday night. Left wing Dwight King and right wing Brandon Kozun scored in regulation for the Monarchs and defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov tallied the lone shootout goal for the Monarchs. Center Luke Adam and left wing Colin Stuart scored for the Pirates in regulation, and left wing Derek Whitmore and right wing Corey Tropp tallied in the shootout. Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (1-1-1) took his first shootout loss of the season, stopping 36-of-38 shots through regulation and overtime, and 7-of-9 shots in the shootout. Pirates netminder David Leggio (1-0-0) earned his first win of the season with 35 saves on 37 shots in regulation and overtime, and eight saves in the shootout. Manchester was 1-for-5 on the power play. Portland was 2-for-7 with the man advantage.

Vs. Bridgeport (10/22): Three fights in less than five seconds and a total of nine goals created some excitement as the Manchester Monarchs topped the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 6-3, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night. Center Justin Azevedo, right wing Zach Harnden, right wing Brandon Kozun (two), left wing Dwight King and left wing David Meckler found the back of the net for the Monarchs. Center Rob Hisey, left wing Justin DiBenedetto and center David Ullstrom tallied for the Sound Tigers. Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (2-1-1) earned his second win of the season stopping 28-of-31 shots. Sound Tigers netminder Nathan Lawson (0-1-0) took the loss with 30 saves on 36 shots. Manchester was 2-for-7 on the power play. Bridgeport was 2-for-6 with the man advantage.

At Springfield (10/23): Netminder Jeff Zatkoff stood on his head and stopped 29 shots to lead the Manchester Monarchs past the Springfield Falcons, 3-1, at the MassMutual Center on Saturday night. Center Justin Azevedo, defenseman Thomas Hickey and left wing Bud Holloway tallied for the Monarchs. Center Chad Kolarik scored the lone goal for the Falcons. Zatkoff (3-1-1) earned his third win of the season stopping 29-of-30 shots. Falcons goaltender David LeNeveu (2-2-0) took his second loss of the season with 28 saves on 30 shots. Manchester was 0-for-5 on the power play. Springfield was 1-for-5 with the man advantage.

Vs. Charlotte (10/24): Netminder Martin Jones earned his first American Hockey League win in his debut as he backstopped the Manchester Monarchs to a 2-1 win over the Charlotte Checkers at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday evening. Left wing David Meckler and center Corey Elkins lit the lamp for the Monarchs. Center Zach Boychuk scored the lone goal for the Checkers. Jones (1-0-0) earned his first career win in the AHL with 36 saves on 37 shots. Checkers netminder Mike Murphy (2-3-0) took his third loss of the season stopping 22 of the 24 shots he faced. Manchester was 1-for-4 on the power play. Charlotte was also 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES

The Manchester Monarchs (5-2-0-1) have collected seven out of a possible eight points in four games this past week to move their club into second place in the Atlantic Division with 11 points. The Monarchs fell in a shootout to the Portland Pirates on Tuesday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center but followed it up with three consecutive victories; a 6-3 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena, a 3-1 victory over the Springfield Falcons at the MassMutual Center on Saturday night and a 2-1 win over the Charlotte Checkers in Manchester on Sunday.

The Monarchs are one point behind the Atlantic Division leading Pirates (6-2-0-0, 12 points) and have moved three points ahead of the third place tie between the Falcons (4-4-0-0, eight points) and the Hartford Wolf Pack (3-3-1-1, eight points).

Manchester's power play is ranked 10th in the AHL as they have scored seven goals on 33 opportunities for a 21.2% conversion rate. On the penalty kill, the Monarchs sit in 18th place in the league as they have given up seven goals when they have been down a man. They have been shorthanded 38 times this season and have an 81.6% penalty kill rating.

Left wing Dwight King (5-3=8) has recorded at least one point in six of the eight games the Monarchs have played this season. He recorded four points (2-2=4) in the team's four games this week.

King is tied for the team lead in points with left wing David Meckler (5-3=8).

King and Meckler are also tied for the Monarchs goal-scoring lead with rookie right wing Brandon Kozun (5-2=7) as they each have five goals in eight games. The players five goals are also tied for fifth place in the AHL among goal scorers.

Meckler is tied for second place in the AHL with two first goals of the games this season.

Kozun's seven points are tied for second among AHL rookies and his five goals are tied for first place among the league's first year players.

Sitting with 23 shots on the season, Kozun is also tied for second among league rookies for shots on goal.

Kozun is tied with fellow teammate, defenseman Alec Martinez (0-7=7), for third place on the Monarchs roster with seven points each.

Martinez's seven points are tied for fourth place among AHL defensemen. The third year defenseman's seven assists are also tied for sixth place in the AHL and tied for second among the league's defensemen.

Leading the Monarchs in the plus/minus category, Martinez has a rating of plus-7 through eight games. His plus-7 rating is tied for the league's lead as well as the lead amongst defensemen.

Martinez is also tied for first place in the AHL and leads the league's defensemen with two shorthanded assists.

In addition, Martinez's 24 shots on net are also tied for second place among the AHL's defensemen.

Center Corey Elkins (3-3=6) scored the game-winning goal in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Checkers and sits in fifth place on the Monarchs squad with six points.

Right wing John Zeiler (0-5=5) ranks sixth on the team with five points. His five assists are also ranked second on the team behind Martinez.

Center Justin Azevedo (3-1=4), left wing Bud Holloway (1-3=4), defenseman David Kolomatis (0-4=4) and defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (0-4=4) are tied for seventh place on the team with four points each.

Holloway and defenseman Thomas Hickey (1-2=3) tallied their first goals of the season in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Falcons.

Right wing Zach Harnden (1-0=1) scored his first professinal goal in his professional debut in Friday's 6-3 win over the Sound Tigers.

Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff has a record of 3-1-1 with a 2.57 goals-against-average and a .914 save percentage in five games this season. He has started three of the four games this week and came away with a 2-0-1 record.

Netminder Martin Jones made his AHL debut in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Checkers. His first AHL win came with 36 saves on 37 shots and gave him a 1.00 goals-against-average and a .973 save percentage.

MONARCHS PROMOTIONS

Monarchs Team With Health Department For The Seasonal And H1N1 Flu Vaccine - The Monarchs Care Foundation is once again teaming up with the City of Manchester Health Department to offer the Seasonal and H1N1 Flu Vaccine to all fans attending the Monarchs game on Friday, October 29 when the team hosts the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7:00 p.m. There will be a nominal fee of $20, cash only, for the Seasonal and H1N1 Flu Vaccine. The clinic will be located behind sections 207 and 208 of the Verizon Wireless Arena from the time the doors open for the Monarchs game at 6:00 p.m. through the second intermission. The vaccine will be available to all fans that are five years of age or older attending the game. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanies by a parent/guardian.
