BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers lost to the Albany Devils Friday night by a final score of 3-0. Stefan Matteau, Chris McKelvie and Kelly Zajac had the goals for Albany, while the Sound Tigers were unable to beat a combination of Keith Kincaid and Scott Wedgewood on 28 shots on goal. The loss drops the Sound Tigers to 19-24-1-4 on the season.
The Sound Tigers had their first of four power plays midway through the first period, but the Devils came away with the best chance. McKelvie raced after a loose puck as Nilsson came out to challenge him for it. McKelvie got there first, deked Nilsson and was hauled down in the process. He was given a penalty shot, but Nilsson shut the door to keep the game scoreless.
Later in the first, however, Matteau scored his eighth of the season and gave the Devils a 1-0 lead. Zajac sent a pass into the slot for Matteau, whose shot hit the post before crossing the goal line. The officials took a second look on replay, but eventually stayed with the good goal ruling.
The Devils extended their lead in the late stages of the second period with two goals in less than three minutes to give themselves a 3-0 lead. First, at 14:26, the Devils cashed in on the power play after Zajac skated into the high slot and ripped a wrist shot past Nilsson. Less than three minutes later, McKelvie walked into the zone down the left wing, drove past the Sound Tigers defense and powered home his own rebound to make it 3-0.
With five minutes left to go in the third period, the Sound Tigers had their best chance to draw closer. McKelvie was whistled for interference and a minute later, Alexander Urbom went to the penalty box for high-sticking. The Sound Tigers had a two-man advantage, but couldn't find a way to beat Wedgewood. Wedgewood came on after Kincaid went to the dressing room with an apparent injury late in the second period.
The Sound Tigers return to action Sunday afternoon when they host the Adirondack Phantoms for the final time in 2013-14. Opening faceoff from Webster Bank Arena is at 3 p.m.
