St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - John Albert turned in a two-goal performance - including one on a shorthanded penalty shot - to propel the St. John's IceCaps to a 5-2 victory over the Worcester Sharks Saturday night at Mile One Centre.
Kael Mouillierat, Jerome Samson, and Adam Lowry also scored for St. John's, which beat Worcester for the first time in regulation this season in six tries. Jason Jaffray picked up two assists on goals 16 seconds apart in the opening period, and Michael Hutchinson stopped 31-of-33 to earn the victory.
Konrad Abeltshauser and Rylan Schwartz had the tallies for the Sharks, while Harri Sateri made 22 stops to take the loss.
The Sharks jumped out to a quick lead just 35 seconds into the contest, when Abeltshauser notched his third of the season. After an IceCaps scoring opportunity transitioned the other way, Abeltshauser sent a point shot through a screen that beat Hutchinson to make it 1-0.
Mouillierat evened the score at 14:07, however, on a heads-up setup from Jaffray. Breaking into the Sharks' zone on the rush, Jaffray found Mouillierat streaking in on the opposite wing with a cross-ice feed that landed right on the tape. Mouillierat made no mistake in wiring it over the pad of Sateri.
Just 16 seconds later, Jaffray - assisting on his second straight tally - connected with Albert for the go-ahead goal. With Jaffray fighting for the puck along the boards, the disc squirted out from the corner to Albert in front of the net, who was Johnny-on-the-spot in pulling it back and squeaking it through the legs of Sateri to make it 2-1.
In the second period, Samson extended the IceCaps' lead to two at 5:54. After Andrew Gordon walked out in front with the puck, he slipped the cross-crease pass to Samson who one-timed it stick side past Sateri.
Worcester cut the deficit to one at 12:12, however, when Schwartz waltzed in on goal after a turnover in the neutral zone and wristed it top corner to the glove side.
Albert put the IceCaps up by two once again in the third, when he buried a shorthanded penalty-shot opportunity just over two minutes in. Storming in on Sateri, Albert fired a shot top shelf, over the blocker, to make it 4-2.
St. John's struck again at 8:20 to stretch the score to 5-2, this time from Lowry. After Sateri made the initial save on Blair Riley, Lowry - out-battling the Sharks' defensemen in front of the net - scooped up the loose biscuit and sent it stick side past Sateri to seal the deal.
