February 8, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
Held off the board until the third period, the Lake Erie Monsters (20-23-0-4) were unable to overcome a two-goal deficit, eventually falling by a 3-1 score Saturday to the San Antonio Rampage (19-21-3-5) before a Quicken Loans Arena crowd of 9,775. Mike Sgarbossa scored the Monsters lone goal, while Garrett Meurs and Trevor Cheek collected assists. The game marks the second straight loss for the Monsters, and second in as many nights against San Antonio for the Monsters.
Drew Shore's goal that gave San Antonio a 1-0 lead at 3:24 of the first period stood as the game's only goal until the 17:54 mark of the second period. Joey Crabb led a rush up the right side, and centered a pass to Jared Gomes, who put his stick on the puck and jammed it past Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard to give San Antonio a 2-0 lead.
Sgarbossa completed a two-on-one rush when Meurs fed a perfect pass to Sgarbossa at 5:10 of the third period, pulling the Monsters to within 2-1. The goal was the second of the campaign for Sgarbossa, but marked the only goal for the Monsters on the evening. With 55 seconds left, Logan Shaw ripped a slap shot past Pickard from the high slot to secure San Antonio's 3-1 win.
Pickard suffers the loss, stopping 30 of 33 shots; he is 11-13-3. Jacob Markstrom stopped 21 of 22 Monsters shots in the San Antonio net; he is 9-10-3 on the season.
The Monsters are back on the ice after the American Hockey League's all-star break when they meet the Oklahoma City Barons on the road Friday night at 8:00 p.m.; a game that airs live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
