Falcons Outlast Crunch, Win In Overtime

Syracuse, NY - The Springfield Falcons (31-12-1-4) defeated the Syracuse Crunch in overtime by the final score of 6-5 Saturday night at War Memorial Arena, as forward Cody Bass notched the game-winning goal in the extra frame.
Bass ended the game in overtime, redirecting a Dalton Prout slap shot from the center point past Syracuse netminder and former Falcon Allen York. For Bass, it was his third goal and first game-winner of the season.
Prout finished the game with three points (one goal, two assists) and a +3 rating, finding the back of the net just 3:19 into the first period with a slap shot from the high slot. The 6-foot-3, 224-pound defenseman had not registered a point in seven games with Springfield prior to Saturday's contest.
Jonathan Marchessault, Jack Skille and Jean-Francois Jacques all extended their point streaks Saturday. Marchessault chipped in with two assists and a +3 rating in the win, his third consecutive game with a point. Over that span, the Quebec City native has totaled six points (one goal, five assists). Skille also extended his point streak to three games, notching a power-play tally at 9:18 of the first period to give Springfield a 2-1 advantage. Skille has four points (two goals, two assists) over the stretch.
Jacques scored his seventh goal of the season and added an assist Saturday, giving the 6-foot-3, 231-pound winger four points (two goals, two assists) in the two-game, weekend set with Syracuse. Jacques scored the game-winning goal in Friday's 4-2 win over the Crunch.
Alex Aleardi - at 12:55 of the second period - and Tim Miller - at 14:35 of the third period - scored the other two Springfield goals.
Despite being down by two scores with less than five minutes remaining, Syracuse scored twice down the stretch to even the score and send the game to overtime. Mike Angelidis tallied at 15:46 to bring the Crunch to within a single goal, and Joey Mormina beat Springfield goaltender Mike McKenna to tie the game at five apiece with only 2:32 remaining in regulation.
Philippe Paradis, Dana Tyrell and Evan Rankin also scored for Syracuse.
McKenna made 36 saves on 41 shots faced in net for the Falcons, earning his third straight win and 13th victory of the season. The St. Louis native leads the American Hockey League with a .932 save percentage and ranks second with a 1.96 goals-against average.
York stopped 17 of 23 shots, falling at the hands of his former team for the second consecutive night. The 6-foot-3, 194-pound goaltender is now 3-4-3 this season.
Both teams had success on the power play. Springfield went 1-for-4 with the man advantage, while Syracuse went 2-for-8.
With the victory, the Falcons extended their win streak to three games, the team's seventh stretch of three or more consecutive victories this season. Springfield has the highest point total (67) as well as the best points percentage (.698) in the AHL.
The Falcons are back in action Sunday, February 9 as the team travels to Providence to take on the Bruins at 3:05 p.m. Springfield returns to the MassMutual Center Friday, February 14 to host the Hartford Wolf Pack at 7:00 p.m.
