PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Nov. 22, 2013) - Kenny Reiter stopped 42 shots, but it wasn't enough for the Sound Tigers Friday, who lost to the Providence Bruins 4-3 in a shootout. The Sound Tigers scored all three of their goals in the third period, with Mike Halmo, Kirill Kabanov, and Anders Lee earning the tallies. Matt Lindblad tied the score late in the third to send it to overtime, with the Bruins eventually prevailed in the shootout.
Reiter shined in a scoreless first period as the Bruins outshot the Sound Tigers 19-6. The Bruins lone power play of the opening period came on a Johan Sundstrom hooking minor, and Reiter made two or three huge save with his team shorthanded. The Sound Tigers had a pair of power-play opportunities but were unable to capitalize. The second penalty to the Bruins was a board called on Bobby Robins, leading to a fight between the right-winger and Brett Gallant. The two each connected on a couple before Gallant wrestled Robins to the ice.
The Sound Tigers generated more chances in the second period, but it was Providence who came away with two goals. First, the Bruins opened the scoring with a goal from Tommy Cross. Alexander Fallstrom won the faceoff as Jared Knight tapped it back to Cross at the point. He sent a snapshot through traffic and beat Reiter to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
Later in the period, after Mike Cornell was called for roughing, the Bruins scored again, just as the penalty expired. David Warsofsky took a shot from the point that Reiter stopped, but the Sound Tigers were unable to clear the rebound. After a battled at the top of the crease, Craig Cunningham found the back of the net and made it 2-0 Bruins.
The Sound Tigers came all the way back in the third period, starting with two goals just 38 seconds into the third period. First, on the tail-end of a carry-over penalty, Halmo deflected a shot from Calvin de Haan to beat Niklas Svedberg and make it a one-goal game. Just 18 seconds later, Kabanov powered home a rebound after Johan Sundstrom's shot was stopped to tie the score.
Later in the third period, the Sound Tigers converted on a power play to take a 3-2 lead. Dallas Jackson blasted a slap shot from the top of the right circle and hit the cross bar. The puck caromed out to Lee, however, who slipped it past Svedberg for the Sound Tigers first lead of the game. Four minutes later, though, the Bruins got a power play of their own and Lindblad drove up the middle and took a pass from Justin Florek, deflected it in, and tied the score.
There was no further scoring and it took just four rounds for the Bruins to come away with the extra point. The Sound Tigers are back in action tomorrow in Worcester before returning home to face the St. John's IceCaps at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.
