B-Sens Bounce Phantoms

November 22, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release

The last loss for the Binghamton Senators happened three weeks ago in Glens Falls. Since then, Binghamton had won six straight. They avenged that November 1 setback to the Phantoms with their seventh straight victory in a 6-2 triumph at the Glens Falls Civic Center on Friday night.

Adirondack had rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the second period to even the score at 2-2 but the Senators cranked up one of the league's top offenses to put the game away.

Tye McGinn (4th) and Jason Akeson (2nd) scored the goals for Adirondack about five minutes apart for the Phantoms who had clearly secured momentum from Binghamton at that point just past the midway mark of the game. Binghamton quickly re-took the lead three minutes later and then tallied goals in the closing minute of the second and near the opening minute of the third for a more comfortable margin.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau led the Senators' attack with two goals and one assist. Binghamton is the hottest team in the AHL and extended their winning streak to seven straight while improving to 12-4-0 overall. The B-Sens have lost only two games in their last 11, both to the Phantoms.

It was a rude way to return to game-action at the GFCC for the Phantoms who had a 20-day gap between home games. Adirondack had won their last two home games on November 1 and 2 (vs. Binghamton and Albany). The Phantoms sustained their first loss on home-ice in almost a full month dating back to an October 25 contest against Norfolk.

Head coach Terry Murray was forthcoming with his disappointment after the game and stated that he expects better from his team.

"Everything was bad, right from the very beginning," Murray said. "We tied the game up 2-2 middle of the second period. Even if you come out of that with a win, we were not good enough."

Perhaps the best news for Adirondack is that they do not have to wait another seven days between games as they did this past week. The Phantoms get right back at it less than 24 hours later against the Albany Devils on Saturday night which is a point that the team can rally around.

"We got to play tomorrow. We got to come back and play better," Murray said. "This was a tough one here. No question about it. With the amount of time we've had to practice, and you could see a team that was real sharp and they took it right to us. They pushed us all over the place, and we weren't good enough."

Corey Cowick opened the scoring for the B-Sens midway through the first period on a rebound of a Frederick Claesson slapshot off the pads of Phantoms' goalie Yann Danis. Binghamton extended the lead to 2-0 early in the second period with Cole Schneider burying his try down low from Mike Hoffman.

Phantoms head coach Terry Murray used his timeout a couple minutes later in an effort to turn things around and the short-term effects were solid. Adirondack would rally from that point with Tye McGinn deflecting a Jason Akeson right-wing slapshot to get the Phantoms on the board. McGinn's fourth of the year would be followed about five minutes later on a similar chip in front by Jason Akeson of a Brandon Manning right-point slapper. And just like that the Phantoms were even at 2-2 and appeared to have control and momentum.

A couple close calls to take the lead for the Phantoms followed after that but Binghamton goalie Nathan Lawson stood tall and allowed his team to regroup and storm back in front. Mike Hoffman dangled in the left-circle around a defenseman and snapped home his team-leading 10th of the season short-side on Yann Danis to put the visitors back in front again. And Jean-Gabriel Pageau tipped a Petersson drive in the last minute of the second to put Binghamton back up by a two-goal margin at the second break.

Phantoms' center Rob Bordson also observed the dramatic shift of momentum. "It was disappointing," Bordson said. "It started out in the 2nd there. We tied it up 2-2, I don't know if we just sat back or what it was. We gave up 2 goals there and they made it 4-2. You try to come back in the locker and regroup but I think they scored within the first 5 minutes...5-2."

That goal early in the third would that extended the lead to 5-2 came with Andre Petersson converting on a 3-on-2 rush from a Shane Prince centering feed. And later Pageau raced past the defense on a 2-on-1 shorthanded opportunity and benefited from a Cole Schneider pass for a quick breakaway. Pageau's top-shelf goal for his second of the night completed the scoring.

Shots were even at 31-31. Adirondack was 0-for-4 on the power play while Binghamton was 0-for-4 with a shorthanded goal. The Phantoms record stands at 7-7-2 while Binghamton continued their rise up the standings as they improved to 12-4-0.

The Senators are 9-2 in their last 11 games played since mid-October. Their only two losses have come against the Phantoms. But Binghamton has come back to even the season-series at two games apiece after the Friday night victory.

Nathan Lawson recorded the win for Binghamton while Yann Danis took the loss for Adirondack. But certainly this loss is not to be focused on the veteran Phantoms' goalie as most of Binghamton's goals came on back-door crosses, rebounds, and one breakaway following a two-on-one shorthanded rush.

The Phantoms are opening a stretch of seven out of eight games at home over a 16-day period from this game through Saturday, December 7. It is the busiest slate of home games all season for Adirondack.

One lucky fan between periods won a $1,000 value diamond ring on Scoville Diamond Dig Night. They had to literally dig in the snow to get it...but it was worth it!

Phantoms Notes: Rob Bordson played in his 116th consecutive Phantoms game in a streak that dates back to February 24, 2012. Cullen Eddy played in his 184th game for the Adirondack Phantoms which is one away from tying Kevin Marshall for second-most all-time. Ben Holmstrom is the all-time leader; The team's captain played in his 197th game for the Adirondack Phantoms.

The Phantoms look to rally on Saturday night against the Albany Devils at 7:00 on Youth Jersey Night for the first 1,000 fans presented by Glens Falls Hospital. A postgame jersey auction will cap the evening featuring the team's special commemorative uniforms honoring the 25-year history of the American Hockey League in Glens Falls.
