Rampage Claim Shootout Win at Texas, 4-3

Cedar Park, Texas - The San Antonio Rampage (9-8-0-1) erased a two-goal deficit and rode a strong performance from goaltender Jacob Markstrom to claim a 4-3 shootout victory over the Texas Stars (9-6-2-2) on Friday night at Cedar Park Center.

The Rampage found themselves behind 2-0 midway through the second period but fought back valiantly, recording three unanswered goals to take the lead late in the third period. However, Texas found the game-tying goal with less than five minutes remaining to force extra hockey.

Jed Ortmeyer's shootout goal in the seventh round claimed the victory for San Antonio and snapped a six-game losing streak against the Stars. Ironically, Ortmeyer gave the Rampage their last win against the Stars as well, as he converted in the 12th round of the shootout back on March 8th, 2013 at Cedar Park Center.

The shootout victory was San Antonio's third-straight this season and pushed the Rampage to above .500 for the first time this year.

Markstrom hemmed the tide early for the Rampage and kept it close early on as Texas poured on the offense. Markstrom stopped 43-of-46 shots and stopped six of seven Stars shooters during the shootout.

Eric Selleck lit the lamp for his second goal in as many games and Dylan Olsen recorded his first of the season in only his third game for the Silver and Black. Garrett Wilson also had a goal on the night and Quinton Howden had a pair of assists.

As expected, plenty of shots were fired on goal in Friday's tilt - as Texas and San Antonio entered the affair as the top two teams in the league in shots per game. Texas held the edge, 46-34, on the night.

However, Texas only had one shot through the first six minutes of action, yet held an early 1-0 lead. Stars captain Maxime Fortunus fired a shot from that point that found its way through traffic at 1:08 of the opening frame.

Markstrom made a great save on Stars forward Chris Mueller with nine minutes remaining in the first period. Mueller sprang loose on a breakaway, but Markstrom kept his glove up and was able to turn aside the shot. The Rampage netminder denied Mueller again with just under a minute left with a nice shoulder save on an odd-man rush.

Fortunus' goal proved to be the only marker of the opening frame and Texas held a 1-0 edge after 20 minutes.

Markstrom started the second period with several point blank chances, but Stars forward Colton Sceviouor eventually gave Texas a 2-0 lead at 7:42, right as a San Antonio penalty expired.

Selleck made it a one-goal game at 14:14 of the second period. The goal came off an offensive zone faceoff win by Jared Gomes. The Rampage cycled the puck and defenseman Alex Petrovic fired a shot and the rebound went right to Selleck in the high slot. The newly named alternate captain made no mistake, firing a perfect wrister that went bar-down on Stars goaltender Allen York.

Petrovic and Quinton Howden collected assists on the goal, breaking a shutout streak of 128:36 against the Stars.

Wilson tallied the game-tying goal when he tipped in a point shot from Jonathan Racine at 2:05 of the third period. Howden also collected an assist on the goal.

Only 5:31 later, Rampage defenseman Dylan Olsen blasted a shot from the point that was tipped in front by Pinizzotto and past York to give the Rampage the 3-2 lead. Defenseman John Lee was awarded a helper on the goal.

However, Stars forward Brendan Ranford tied the game back up at 3-3 with only 4:26 remaining in the third period off a quick shot from the right faceoff circle.

Texas had a flurry of chances in the final minutes, but San Antonio was able to hold on and force overtime. Both teams exchanged chances in the overtime session, but neither was able to light the lamp and the game went to a shootout.

Drew Shore lit the lamp in the fifth round of the shootout and Markstrom did his part, stopping six of seven Stars shooters, before Ortmeyer lit the lamp on a wicked wrister to give the Rampage the extra point.

San Antonio went 0-for-4 on the power play, while Texas was 0-for-1 with the man advantage on the night.
