Pasquale, IceCaps Fend off Penguins

November 22, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release

Eddie Pasquale made 31 saves and Patrice Cormier scored the game-winner as the St. John's IceCaps cooled off the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 2-1 Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Cormier's second period tally stood as the deciding marker while Pasquale was brilliant in the third period to help close out the win. St. John's killed off all six Wilkes-Barre/Scranton power plays, including a huge five-on-three for 32 seconds late in the final frame. Travis Ehrhardt picked up the other tally for St. John's.

The Penguins struck first on their ninth shot of the night on Harry Zolnierczyk's eighth of the season. Jason Megna sprinted down the ride side and fed a pass in front to Zolnierczyk, whose redirection beat Pasquale to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

Ehrhardt evened the score for St. John's at 16:39 with his first as an IceCap. Brenden Kichton left the puck for Ehrhardt, who skated to the top of the circle and wired a slap shot past Jeff Deslauriers to make it a 1-1 game.

The IceCaps took a 2-1 lead at 15:56 of the second on Cormier's second of the season. Ben Chiarot gained the offensive zone and slid the puck forward through a defender to Cormier, who made a strong move to the net and went to the backhand to beat Deslauriers along the ice.

The Penguins pressed hard for the tie in the third as they were granted three opportunities on the power play, but Pasquale and the IceCaps' penalty killers were equal to the task. Pasquale made 14 stops in the period to pick up his eighth win.

The IceCaps and Penguins do battle once again Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena (8:35 PM NT) before heading to Bridgeport for a Sunday matinee at Webster Bank Arena. Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers at www.stjohnsicecaps.com and 930 AM This Is Newfoundland Labrador, or watch live online at www.ahlive.com.
