Portland Pirates News Release
Norfolk, VA - The Pirates jumped out to a two goal lead early, but were unable to hold on as the Norfolk Admirals score three straight goals to defeat the Pirates 3-2 in overtime at the Norfolk Scope. Rickard Rakell had the game winner for the Admirals with 36 seconds left in the overtime period.
After a scoreless first half of the game that was highlighted by a Kyle Hagel and Zack Stortini fight during the first period, the Pirates got on the board first. Jordan Martinook broke the stalemate with 8:36 left in the second with his third goal of the year to give then Pirates a 1-0 lead. Tobias Rieder and Brandon McMillan picked up assists, extending McMillan's point streak to 4 games in his first game back at the Norfolk Scope since he was acquired by the Coyotes. Just over 4 minutes later, Ethan Werek doubled the lead, intercepting a pass from behind the Admirals net and burying it past John Gibson for his first goal of the season. Kyle Hagel had the assist on Werek's goal. The Admirals cut the lead in half with just 19.7 seconds remaining in the period, as John Kurtz scored following a Norfolk power play to get the Admirals on the board.
Just 4:44 into the third period, Alex Grant tied the game for the Admirals, slipping the puck past Mark Visentin to tie the game at 2. Both Gibson and Visentin shut the door for the remained of regulation, sending the Pirates to their third straight overtime game 3rd straight OT game.
A Mathieu Brodeur penalty in overtime would prove to be costly for the Pirates, as Rickard Rakell would beat Visentin to give the Admirals the win with just 36 seconds remaining in the extra frame. The loss is the Pirates first overtime loss of the year, and drops them to 1-1-2 beyond regulation.
Mark Visentin takes the loss for the Pirates, dropping to 5-4-1 on the year, while rookie John Gibson improves to 6-4-2. The Admirals outshot the Pirates 33 to 26, the first time that Norfolk has outshot an opponent this season. The Pirates fall to 6-5-1-2 on the year, but keep their point streak intact at 6 games after earning the point tonight. The loss also snapped the Pirates 4 game road win streak.
The Pirates will play the Admirals again tomorrow night for their final game at Norfolk this season. Puck drops at 7:15 and the game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County.
