Snakes split in Florida

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Columbus Cottonmouths received two of a possible four points this weekend, splitting a weekend series at TECO Arena in Estero, Fla. against the Florida Everblades. The ‘Blades defeated Columbus 2-1 on Friday night, but the Snakes came back with a vengeance on Saturday, defeating Florida 4-2 to earn the split. The Cottonmouths, however, have fallen to fifth place in the Central Division, two points behind fourth-place Pensacola, who still has two games in hand on Columbus. The Cottonmouths enter a busy next five weeks until the season finale on April 3 against Pensacola with fifteen games remaining on the schedule, two this week on the road against Greenville and Florence and one at home Saturday against Augusta. Tuesday, March 2 – Columbus at Greenville, 7:05 PM EST

The Snakes hit the road again to the BI-LO Center in Greenville, S.C. for a matchup against the Grrrowl on Tuesday. The Grrrowl, already mathematically eliminated for post-season contention, are 10-41-5 on the season. Columbus is a perfect 4-0-0 against the Grrrowl on the season, outscoring them by a combined 20-5 margin. The Snakes defeated the Grrrowl 5-2 in their last meeting in Greenville on February 22.

Thursday, March 4 – Columbus at Florence, 7:00 PM EST

The Cottonmouths remain in the Palmetto State with a game against the Florence Pride on Thursday.

Columbus has also had success with Florence on the season, going 4-1-0 against them in the season series to date, including a 10-0 victory in the last meeting against the two teams in the Snake Pit on February 14, the largest margin of victory and highest goal-scoring output in one game so far this season in the ECHL and setting Columbus ECHL records.

Saturday, March 6 – Augusta at Columbus, 7:30 PM EST

The Snakes finalize their five game road trip and return home on Saturday to face the intrastate rival Augusta Lynx. Columbus has the advantage in the season series with Augusta as well, going 4-2-0 against the Lynx in the season series to date, including winning the last four straight between the two teams. The Cottonmouths shut out Augusta 3-0 in their last meeting January 24 in Columbus.

COTTONMOUTHS WEEK IN REVIEW

Friday, February 27 – Columbus 1 at Florida 2

J.F. Plourde scored the lone goal in the contest on the power play as the Florida Everblades defeated the Snakes 2-1 Friday night at TECO Arena. Jason Tapp took the loss despite stopping 26 of 28 shots on goal for Columbus. Jeff Maund turned away 25 of 26 for the win in net for the Everblades. Florida was held scoreless in five power play chances while the Snakes made good on one of their four opportunities with the man advantage.

Saturday, February 28 – Columbus 4 at Florida 2

Plourde provided half of the offense for the Snakes, scoring two straight Columbus sandwiched between a Dan Tudin goal in the first period and a Marc-Andre Thinel goal in the third en route to a 4-2 victory over Florida on Saturday night. Jason Tapp allowed two goals in the second straight game but had much more work, making 45 saves on 47 Everblades shots on goal. Jeff Maund suffered the loss in net for Florida, stopping 41 of 43. Florida scored on one of their six power plays while holding the Snakes scoreless in their five chances.

THREE STARS OF THE WEEK

1. J.F. Plourde, F – Plourde scored three goals on the weekend in Florida, notching a power play marker on Friday and the game-winner on Saturday.

2. Jason Tapp, G – Tapp played well in both contests, allowing two goals in each game and stopping a combined 71 of 75 shots on the weekend in Estero.

3. Dan Tudin, F – Tudin scored a goal and an assist in Saturday night's game.
