Playoff bound Gulls lose some ground

March 1, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO –– It's so tough to stay atop the overall ECHL standings. A loss here... an overtime loss there... and you'll lose ground for sure. The San Diego Gulls picked up four of a possible six points last week. Nothing wrong with that eh? Unfortunately for the Blue and Orange, however, the teams they're worried about did even better.

The Gulls began the week with a win in Fresno on Wednesday. They then fell to Las Vegas in overtime on Friday before losing to the South Carolina Stingrays in a shootout on Saturday. San Diego did however clinch a playoff spot.

With the 1-0-2 record last week, the Gulls fall to third in the overall ECHL standings, now six points behind the Wheeling Nailers. San Diego is one point behind the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies, who occupy the second spot overall in the league. The Blue and Orange still lead the Western Conference – two points ahead of Louisiana – and Pacific Division – two points in front of Las Vegas.

WEEK IN REVIEW:

Feb. 25 @ Fresno:

After the Falcons snapped the Gulls' 14-game home streak on Saturday, Feb. 21, the Gulls got some revenge with a 5-2 win in Fresno. It didn't come easy though. The Gulls built a 3-0 lead midway through the second period, thanks to goals by Sandro Sbrocca, Sylvain Deschatelets and Billy Tibbetts. The Falcons scored two straight to make things interesting, but Tibbetts and Mark Pederson restored order with back-to-back tallies midway through the third period.

Feb. 27 @ Las Vegas:

Dave Cousineau, younger brother of San Diego's Dan Cousineau, scored 3:35 into overtime, lifting the Wranglers to a 2-1 win over the Blue and Orange. It was a scoreless game until Chris Wheaton broke the deadlock midway through the second period. Greg Barber tied it early in the third, before Dave Cousineau won it in the extra session. Trevor Koenig turned aside a season-high 45 shots, but suffered the hard-luck loss.

Feb. 28 vs. South Carolina:

The Gulls' struggles outside of their division continued as the Blue and Orange dropped a close one to the Stingrays, 5-4 in a shootout. South Carolina got two power-play goals from Curtis Huppe and Andy Powers netted the deciding score in the seventh round of the shootout. The Stingrays had a 4-3 lead late in the third period, but Deschatelets tied it with 14 seconds left. San Diego is now 3-3-3 against non-Pacific Division teams.

THIS WEEK:

The Gulls now embark on another three-game Central Division road trip, which starts Friday against the Pensacola Ice Pilots. San Diego then moves on to play the Texas Wildcatters Saturday and Sunday. Friday's game begins at 5:05 p.m. PST, but will be tape delayed on KPOP 1360AM until 7 p.m. (PST). Saturday's game starts at 5:05 p.m. (PST) and Sunday's game begins at 3:05 p.m. (PST).
