(Hershey, PA) - Mike Sgarbossa finished a four-point night with the overtime winning goal as the Hershey Bears upended the Utica Comets, 6-5, on Friday night at the Adirondack Bank Center. The victory moved Hershey's win streak to nine games.
In a wild game, Hershey grabbed a 4-1 lead through the first 20 minutes. Garrett Pilon opened the scoring for the Bears, notching a pair of goals in just 11 seconds. He scored his fourth goal of the season at 6:04, striking on a slapshot off a faceoff win by Sgarbossa. Off the ensuing draw at center, Sgarbossa skated up ice and fed Pilon on the right wing. He snapped a shot over the glove of Utica goaltender Michael DiPietro to make it 2-0 Hershey.
After a Jalen Chatfield shot from Utica hit the crossbar, Hershey scored to make it 3-0. Forward Kody Clark capitalized for his first AHL goal, popping a rebound over a sprawled DiPietro. The goaltender failed to glove an Axel Jonsson-Fjalby shot, and Clark deposited the rebound, ending DiPietro's night after surrendering three goals on just nine shots.
The team's traded goals to end the first period with Vincent Arseneau scoring for Utica at 8:34, but the Bears regained the three goal lead on a Joe Snivey wrist shot that connected at 13:10.
After Utica's Seamus Malone scored the lone goal of the second period, Hershey held a 4-2 lead through 40 minutes. However, it was the Comets making a third period comeback. Former Bear Carter Camper made it 4-3 Hershey with a goal only 4:22 into the frame, beating Hershey netminder Vitek Vanecek from the right wing. Just 90 seconds later, Lukas Jasek tied the game on a long-range shot that fooled Vanecek and trickled by the Hershey netminder.
Hershey responded with a go-ahead goal from Brian Pinho to make it 5-4. With the Bears shorthanded, a Utica player was hit by his own teammate's slapshot, allowing Hershey to skate up ice on a 2-on-1 rush. Jonsson-Fjallby carried the puck down the left wing and fed Pinho on the backdoor for his fifth goal of the season at 12:54.
Utica once again responded as Jasek scored his second goal of the game at 14:19 to tie the affair, 5-5. Justin Bailey made the play happen, driving down the left wing before centering to Jasek, who was able to beat Vanecek from the top of the crease.
In overtime, Camper was whistled for slashing, and Hershey took advantage on the power play. Sgarbossa scored on a one-time slapshot from the right point to give Hershey the 6-5 win. Pilon assisted on the goal, giving him a three-point contest.
The Bears return to action Saturday evening as they host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at Giant Center. The puck drops at 7 p.m. and ticket information is available at HersheyBears.com.
